1/12th Scale Ladies Pinafore & Sweater Set for Dolls House Doll

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern by Frances Powell creates a vintage-inspired 1960s-style outfit designed to fit 5½-inch (14 cm) tall dolls house dolls. The set consists of two separate garments: a skinny rib sweater and a coordinating pinafore dress. The sweater measures approximately 5 cm (2 inches) from neck to hem with a 3.5 cm (1¼ inch) width across the hem and matching 3.5 cm (1¼ inch) sleeve length. The pinafore is a larger garment measuring 9 cm (3¾ inches) from neck to hem with a 4 cm (1½ inch) width across the hem, creating a layered vintage ensemble when worn together.

Techniques Used

This advanced-level knitting pattern employs several intermediate to advanced techniques suitable for experienced miniature knitters. The pattern utilizes stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knit fabric appearance. The sweater features a skinny rib construction, a technique that creates vertical textured lines through alternating knit and purl stitches. The pattern incorporates decreasing techniques including k2tog (knit two stitches together) and p2tog (purl two stitches together) for shaping the garment pieces. Stitch holders or safety pins are used to hold active stitches while working different sections of the garment, a standard technique for constructing fitted pieces with proper seaming.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the basis of the fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create textured effects and stocking stitch
  • Stocking stitch (sst) – alternating rows of knit and purl stitches creating a smooth, classic finish
  • Knit two together (k2tog) – a decrease technique that reduces stitch count for shaping
  • Purl two together (p2tog) – a decrease technique used in purl rows for shaping

Materials Required

This pattern demands extremely fine materials appropriate for 1/12th scale miniature work. For the skinny rib sweater, you will need size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 00000) knitting needles—among the smallest needles available—and 37.5 metres (42 yards) of 1-ply yarn. The pattern also requires stitch holders or safety pins for managing stitches during construction. For the pinafore, the same size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 00000) knitting needles are used with 25 metres (28 yards) of 1-ply yarn in each of three colors: light, medium, and dark shades, allowing for a multi-colored design. Stitch holders are needed for the pinafore as well. The yarn weight specified is cobweb weight, an extremely fine yarn category essential for achieving proper scale and drape on miniature dolls house garments.

Additional Pattern Information

This pattern is designed for advanced knitters due to the extreme fineness of the materials and the precision required when working at 1/12th scale. The pattern notes that gauge is not critical since dolls house dolls vary greatly in size and proportions, allowing knitters some flexibility in final fit. The design is inspired by circa 1960s fashion, reflecting vintage styling appropriate for period dolls house displays. The pattern was created by designer Frances Powell and is presented as a downloadable PDF format, making it accessible for miniature enthusiasts worldwide.
