Product Description

Written pattern

Materials required: Ladies jumper front - size 20 (0.90 mm) needles, 25 metres 1-ply yarn, stitch holder for neck, 3 small buttons or beads. Neck warmers - Oddments of 1-ply wool (approx 15 metres per collar), pair size 19 (1 mm/US size 5/0), stitch holders. NOTE: These items are designed to be worn under a coat or jacket to give the illusion the doll is wearing a jumper and to avoid the bulk of a full jumper which often looks too bulky in 1/12th scale.

Finished sizes: Jumper front approx 1¾-inches/4 cm tall by 1¼-inches/3 cm wide. Neck warmers approx ¾-inch/2 cm square.

Gauge - Gauge is not important for this project as doll house dolls vary greatly in size.

1:12th Scale Jumper Front and Neckwarmers by Frances Powell

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Frances Powell creates authentic miniature garments for dollhouse dolls, specifically designed to fit 5½ to 6-inch (14-15 cm) tall dolls. The pattern includes a ladies jumper front inspired by 1937-45 fashion and matching neckwarmers suitable for both ladies and gentlemen dolls. These pieces are strategically designed as layering items to be worn under coats or jackets, creating the visual illusion of a complete jumper while avoiding the bulk that full-scale miniature jumpers often present in 1:12th scale dollhouse settings.

What Is Being Made

  • Ladies Jumper Front: A partial garment piece approximately 1¾ inches (4 cm) tall by 1¼ inches (3 cm) wide, featuring a neckline with button or bead closures
  • Neckwarmers: Separate collar pieces approximately ¾ inch (2 cm) square, designed in both ladies and gentlemen versions

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for miniature work. The pattern utilizes knit and purl stitches as indicated by the standard knitting abbreviations (k for knit, p for purl). Construction involves stitch holders for managing neckline stitches, allowing for proper shaping and finishing. The design demonstrates practical miniature garment construction methods, including strategic placement of closures and careful stitch management to achieve proper fit on tiny dolls.

Materials Required

For the Ladies Jumper Front: Size 20 (0.90 mm) needles, 25 metres of 1-ply yarn, a stitch holder for the neckline, and 3 small buttons or beads for fastening.

For the Neckwarmers: A pair of size 19 (1 mm/US size 0/5) needles, approximately 15 metres of 1-ply wool per collar, and stitch holders for construction.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Considerations

This pattern calls for cobweb weight yarn in 1-ply construction, representing some of the finest yarn available for knitting. The cobweb weight classification and 1-ply structure are essential for achieving the delicate scale appropriate to 1:12th miniature work. The pattern notes that oddments of 1-ply wool are suitable for the neckwarmers, making this an economical project for using leftover fine yarns from other miniature knitting projects.

Gauge and Sizing Notes

Notably, this pattern indicates that gauge is not critical for successful completion, as individual dollhouse dolls vary significantly in size. This flexibility makes the pattern more accessible to knitters and allows for adaptation based on the specific doll being dressed. The finished dimensions provide clear targets for completion while acknowledging the inherent variations in miniature doll proportions.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills in casting on, basic stitches, and finishing techniques. The miniature scale and fine yarn weight present challenges beyond absolute beginner level, but the straightforward construction and relatively small finished pieces make this an achievable project for knitters with some experience.
