1:12th Scale Aran Sweater 2 by Frances Powell
What is Being Made
This is a miniature man's Aran sweater designed to fit 5½ to 6-inch (14-15 cm) tall dolls house dolls. The finished garment measures approximately 1½ inches (4 cm) across the chest and 2½ inches (6 cm) in height, making it an authentic scaled replica of a traditional Aran knit sweater for dollhouse fashion and display.
Techniques Used
This advanced miniature knitting project employs several specialized techniques characteristic of Aran knit construction. The pattern utilizes cable twisting and crossed stitches to create the textured surface typical of Aran sweaters. Specific techniques include Tw2F (Twist 2 forward), Tw2B (twist 2 back), and Cr2B (cable cross back), which are foundational to Aran patterning. The designer notes that this project is not suitable for a first project in miniature knitting, indicating it requires prior experience with extremely fine-scale knitting work and precision stitch manipulation.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches to create textured patterns
- Increase (inc) – worked by knitting twice into a single stitch to add stitches
- Tw2F (Twist 2 forward) – knit into the back of the 2nd stitch, then into the front of the first stitch, slipping both off together
- Tw2B (Twist 2 back) – knit into the front of the 2nd stitch, then into the back of the first stitch, slipping both off together
- Cr2B (Cable cross back) – slip stitches onto a cable needle to create crossed cable effects
Materials Required
This project demands extremely fine materials suited to miniature work. Crafters will need size 19 (1.00 mm/US size 5/0) knitting needles, which are among the smallest standard needles available. The yarn requirement is 65 yards (63 metres) of 1-ply wool in cobweb weight – an exceptionally fine yarn thickness that allows for the precise stitch definition necessary at 1:12th scale. Additional materials include 2 stitch holders or safety pins for managing stitches during construction and a cable needle for executing the twisted and crossed stitches that define the Aran pattern.
Design Notes
Gauge is noted as not important for this pattern, as dolls house dolls vary greatly in size. This flexibility allows crafters to adjust their work to fit their specific doll. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF from designer Frances Powell, originally published as part of the Buttercup Miniatures collection in 2011.
