What is Being Made

Winter Shadows is an elegant evening shawl measuring 40cm by 160cm (16" x 64"), designed by Louise Zass-Bangham as an accessible knitting project that combines visual sophistication with intermediate-level techniques. The shawl features a striking color palette inspired by winter trees silhouetted against cold skies, using contrasting opaque and sheer stripes to create luxurious visual and tactile effects. The irregular stripe widths maintain modern interest throughout the knitting process while the combination of materials provides both warmth and elegant drape suitable for evening wear.

The design philosophy centers on creating beautiful knits that remain accessible to knitters of varying abilities. Winter Shadows is worked flat using circular needles, which are recommended due to the length of individual rows rather than for circular construction. Contrast Yarn: Rowan Kidsilk Haze in Anthracite 639, composed of 70% super kid mohair and 30% silk with 210 meters per 25g ball. Two balls are needed to complete the shawl.

Needles: The project requires both 4.5mm (US 7) and 5mm (US 8) circular needles with a 120cm (48") cable. The circular needle format accommodates the long row lengths inherent to the shawl's dimensions, making them practical for managing the fabric during knitting.

Additional Supplies: A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Tension
