Product Description

Tilly’s Socks are knit from the toe up in two lace patterns that gradually transform into one another. The heel flap is worked in lace as well, with the pattern flowing seamlessly up the leg. The cuffs are finished with twisted ribbing, ensuring the socks stay on snuggly.

The lace patterns are based on rib stitch, which makes for foot-hugging socks with a comfortable fit on a wide range of foot sizes. Although the socks come in one size only (64 stitches), both foot and leg length can be adjusted to your measurements and preferences. Right and left socks are identical and can be worked two at a time.

The pattern is written with both metric and US terminology. Both written and charted instructions are given for the stitch patterns.

Gauge: 30 sts x 42 rnds = 4" in stockinette, blocked.

Tilly's Socks by Susanna Winter

What is Being Made

Tilly's Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of lace socks inspired by Ensign Sylvia Tilly from the USS Discovery crew. These socks feature intricate lace patterning throughout, combining aesthetic appeal with functional comfort. The design celebrates Tilly's character with thoughtful construction details that reflect both engineering precision and creative flair.

Construction Method and Approach

The socks are knit from the toe up, a construction method that allows for precise fit adjustments and eliminates the need for binding off at the toe. This approach is particularly advantageous for achieving a seamless, comfortable toe closure. The pattern features two distinct lace patterns that gradually transform into one another as you work up the foot and leg, creating visual interest and demonstrating advanced pattern integration.

Stitch Techniques and Pattern Details

The lace patterns used throughout Tilly's Socks are based on rib stitch, providing both aesthetic openwork and functional structure. This rib-based foundation creates foot-hugging socks with excellent elasticity and a comfortable fit across a wide range of foot sizes. The lace patterning is not limited to the leg; the heel flap is also worked in lace, allowing the pattern to flow seamlessly from toe through heel and up the leg for a cohesive design.

The cuffs are finished with twisted ribbing, which serves a practical purpose: keeping the socks securely in place during wear. This ribbed finish prevents slipping and ensures the socks remain comfortable throughout the day.

Sizing and Customization

Although the pattern is provided in one standard size with 64 stitches, it offers flexibility for personalization. Both foot length and leg length can be adjusted to match your individual measurements and preferences, making the pattern adaptable to different leg proportions and shoe sizes. The socks are designed so that right and left socks are identical, simplifying the knitting process and allowing you to work both socks simultaneously if desired.

Yarn and Materials

Tilly's Socks is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, which provides the ideal thickness for creating defined lace stitches while maintaining the delicate openwork characteristic of the pattern. This yarn weight is standard for sock knitting and produces socks with excellent drape and durability.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated at intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with solid foundational skills who are ready to tackle lace work and more complex stitch patterns. Experience with basic sock construction and comfort reading lace charts will enhance your success with this project.
