Riley Blake Tablecloth Quilt Pattern by Lori Holt – Free Downloadable PDF

The Riley Blake Tablecloth is a charming intermediate-level quilting pattern designed by Lori Holt and offered as a free downloadable PDF from Riley Blake Designs. The finished quilt measures 42½" x 56½", making it a versatile lap or throw size that showcases a cheerful, retro-inspired aesthetic drawn from the Bake Sale Collection by Riley Blake Designs.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a pieced quilt top built around two distinct block types: the Tablecloth Block and the Center Block, set together on the diagonal with Setting Triangles and Corner Triangles. The overall layout creates a lively, on-point design that evokes the look of a vintage kitchen tablecloth — bright, graphic, and full of personality. A total of 12 Tablecloth Blocks are constructed and arranged alongside center blocks and setting pieces to complete the quilt center before borders and binding are added.

Block Construction and Design Details

Each Tablecloth Block finishes at 10" x 10" and is assembled from a carefully arranged combination of 2½" squares and Half Square Triangles (HSTs). Specifically, each block includes:

  • 8 Half Square Triangles forming the dynamic angled elements of the block
  • 4 pink bowls (C3431 Pink) 2½" squares
  • 4 green dots (C3435 Green) 2½" squares
  • 4 yellow cherry (C3433 Yellow) 2½" squares
  • 1 blue main (C3430 Blue) 2½" center square

The squares are laid out in 5 rows of 5 squares, then sewn row by row to complete each block. The repetition of this block across the quilt creates a cohesive, rhythmic pattern that is satisfying to piece and visually engaging when assembled.

Techniques Used

This pattern calls upon several core quilting techniques that place it firmly in the intermediate skill level:

  • Half Square Triangle (HST) construction – HSTs are one of the most fundamental piecing units in quilting, created by sewing two contrasting fabric squares together on the diagonal, trimming, and pressing open to yield two mirror-image triangle units. Accuracy in cutting and pressing is essential for crisp points.
  • On-point (diagonal) setting – The blocks are arranged and sewn together on the diagonal rather than in a straight grid, which adds visual movement and sophistication. Rows are sewn together diagonally, requiring careful attention to block orientation.
  • Setting Triangles and Corner Triangles – These fill the edges and corners of the diagonal layout. As noted in the pattern, they are intentionally cut larger than needed so the quilter can square up the quilt center accurately, leaving a consistent ¼" seam allowance on all sides.
  • Precise cutting – Seam allowances vary throughout the pattern, so the instructions emphasize measuring through the center of the quilt before cutting border pieces — an important intermediate-level skill.
  • Quilt sandwich layering and binding – The finished quilt top is layered with batting and backing, then bound using a favorite Riley Blake Bake Sale Collection fabric.

Stitches and Sewing Methods

  • ¼" seam allowance throughout all piecing (standard quilting seam)
  • All piecing is sewn with right sides together unless otherwise stated
  • Straight-stitch machine sewing is used for all block assembly and quilt top construction
