Knitted Christmas Ornaments in Regia 4 Ply – Free Downloadable PDF Pattern (R0097)

This free knitting pattern from Regia (pattern reference R0097) provides instructions for creating charming knitted Christmas tree ornaments and decorations, including a miniature sock and miniature sweater (Pulli) designs. These make wonderful festive decorations, gift toppers, or stocking stuffers, and are an ideal project for using up leftover sock yarn. The pattern is available as a downloadable PDF at no cost.

Materials Required

Yarn

  • Regia 4-fädig (4 Ply) sock yarn – a blend of 75% Schurwolle (pure new wool) and 25% Polyamid (nylon), with an approximate yardage of 210 metres per 50g ball
  • Colours used: Fb 01992 natur (natural/cream), Fb 02741 fuchsia meliert (heathered fuchsia), and Fb 02742 rot meliert (heathered red)
  • Only 50g or yarn remnants/leftovers are required, making this an excellent stash-busting project

Needles and Tools

  • Milward double-pointed needle set (Nadelspiel), size 2–3 mm – used for knitting the miniature sock in the round
  • Milward straight knitting needles, size 2–3 mm – used for knitting the miniature sweater (Pulli) pieces flat
  • Crochet hook, size 2.5 mm – used for finishing details
  • Cable needle (Zopfnadel) – used for cable stitch work on the sweater ornament

Tension / Gauge

Using 2–3 mm needles and working in stocking stitch (glatt rechts): 30 stitches and 42 rows/rounds = 10 x 10 cm. As these are small decorative items rather than fitted garments, achieving exact tension is less critical, but it will affect the finished size of each ornament.

Design 1 – Miniature Knitted Sock Ornament

The miniature sock is knitted in the round using a set of four double-pointed needles, replicating the construction of a traditional hand-knitted sock but in a tiny, decorative scale. It is worked in Regia 4 Ply across the three colourways, making it a beautifully festive little ornament.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Bündchenmuster (rib stitch) – a 1x1 rib (one stitch knit, one stitch purl, alternating) worked for the cuff section, giving the sock its characteristic elasticated top edge
  • Glatt rechts (stocking stitch in the round) – every round knitted, creating a smooth, classic fabric for the leg and foot of the sock
  • Bumerang-Ferse (boomerang heel / short-row heel) – a popular sock-knitting technique that creates a neat, rounded heel without the need for picking up stitches; worked using verkürzte Reihen (short rows) with double stitches (doppelte Maschen) to avoid holes at the turning points

Construction Overview

  • Cast on 32 stitches (8 stitches per needle across 4 double-pointed needles) in Fb 01992 natur
  • Work 7 rounds in 1x1 rib for the cuff
  • Change to Fb 02742 rot meliert and work 22 rounds in stocking stitch for the leg
  • Work the boomerang short-row heel over the stitches of needles
