Mathilde Socks by Myriam Forneris
What is Being Made
Mathilde Socks is a knitted sock pattern designed by independent designer Myriam Forneris. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a pair of fitted socks available in three sizes: Small (56 stitches), Medium (64 stitches), and Large (72 stitches). The socks feature a decorative lace pattern integrated into the design, making them both functional and visually interesting for everyday wear.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses the knitting craft exclusively. The socks are constructed using circular knitting techniques, worked in the round on a long circular needle to create seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern incorporates stockinette stitch as the primary stitch structure, combined with a lace pattern section that adds decorative openwork detail to the design. This combination of techniques creates texture and visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity needed for functional socks.
Stitches and Stitch Work
The primary stitch used throughout Mathilde Socks is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic knit fabric. The pattern also features a dedicated lace section that uses yarn overs and decreases to create openwork details. Working the lace requires attention to stitch markers placed at specific intervals to maintain pattern accuracy. The combination of stockinette and lace stitches creates a balanced design suitable for beginners who have basic knitting skills and are ready to learn simple lace techniques.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
Mathilde Socks calls for fingering weight yarn (4-ply), specifically two complementary yarns from Garnstudio:
- Main Color (CP): Garnstudio Drops Fabel in 144 Light Pearl Grey, approximately 50 grams (1.8 ounces, 210 meters or 230 yards). This yarn is composed of 75% wool and 25% polyamide.
- Contrast Color (CC): Garnstudio Drops Delight in 06 Pink\Purple, approximately 20 grams (1.8 ounces, 175 meters or 191 yards). This yarn is also 75% wool and 25% polyamide.
Needles and Tools
The pattern requires 2.5 mm (US 1) circular needles measuring 80 centimeters (32 inches) or longer to accommodate the small circumference of sock knitting. Additional tools include stitch markers—at least two for marking the lace section and optionally one additional marker to denote the beginning of round—a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and scissors for finishing.
Gauge
The correct gauge for Mathilde Socks is 29 stitches and 35 rounds per 10 centimeters (4 inches) when working in stockinette stitch with the lace pattern. Knitters should adjust needle size as necessary to achieve this gauge, ensuring the finished socks fit properly and have the intended drape and structure.
Difficulty Level
Mathilde Socks is rated as a beginner-level pattern, making it accessible to knitters who have mastered basic knitting skills and are ready to explore simple lace work. The straightforward construction combined with the introduction of lace techniques makes this an ideal project for developing intermediate skills while creating a wearable, practical garment.
