I recently revisited Marrakesh and found that I love it as much now as when I first went in 2023. The city is so full of vibrant colour and surface pattern that at times it can be a little overwhelming! Les Jardins Majorelle provide a calming escape from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and are quite the inspiration.
Created by the French Orientalist artist Jacques Majorelle over the course of almost forty years the gardens and the villa that stands within them, were bought by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in the 1980s. The villa is now home to the Berber Museum, which exhibits artifacts of the Amazigh culture. The villa also holds a collection of Majorelle’s paintings.
This project was inspired by the huge cacti that grow in the gardens and the ceramic tiles and painted walls that can be found throughout the botanical landscapes. It features hexagonal motifs made in the round, with techniques such as beading, colourwork and 3D bobbles included.
