Lunar Star Dust Embroidery Pattern by DMC – Free Downloadable PDF (PAT0263)

The Lunar Star Dust pattern is a free, beginner-friendly embroidery design from the DMC library, part of the Intergalactic collection. Released as a downloadable PDF, this celestial-themed design captures the dreamy, cosmic feel of stardust and lunar imagery, making it an ideal introduction to hand embroidery for newcomers to the craft.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a decorative embroidered piece measuring 19.5 x 19.5 cm. The finished design is a square composition featuring a repeating arrangement of motifs coded across four colour zones (A1, A2, C1, and D1), creating a scattered, star-dust-like effect across the fabric. The design is bilingual, presented in both English and French, reflecting DMC's international reach.

Techniques Used

  • Backstitch (Point arrière) – Used for two of the colour codes (A and C), backstitch creates clean, continuous lines ideal for outlining shapes and adding fine detail. It is one of the most fundamental hand embroidery stitches and is highly recommended for beginners.
  • Satin Stitch (Passé plat) – Assigned to colour code B, satin stitch involves laying parallel straight stitches closely together to fill a shape with smooth, solid colour. It gives a polished, lustrous finish particularly well-suited to small motifs.
  • Pistil Stitch (Point de pistil) – Used for colour code D, the pistil stitch is a decorative knotted stitch that creates a small dot with a short tail, resembling the pistil of a flower. It adds delicate texture and dimension to the design, perfect for suggesting scattered stars or dust particles.

Stitches Used

  • Backstitch – worked with 4 strands of thread as specified in the instructions
  • Satin Stitch – worked with 4 strands of thread
  • Backstitch (second application, colour C) – worked with 2 strands of thread for finer detail
  • Pistil Stitch – worked with 2 strands of thread for a delicate, refined finish

Materials and Threads

The pattern calls for two distinct types of DMC embroidery thread, combining classic cotton with a touch of shimmer:

  • DMC Mouliné Spécial Art 117 – the iconic six-strand divisible cotton embroidery floss, used here in shade 310 (Black), with one skein required. This thread is renowned for its colourfast quality and smooth finish.
  • DMC Light Effects Embroidery Thread – a specialty thread with a metallic or pearlescent sheen, used in shade E3821 (a warm golden light effect), with one skein required. This thread adds the luminous, celestial sparkle that defines the Lunar Star Dust aesthetic.

A No. 12 needle is recommended for working the design. The pattern is transferred onto fabric using a Magic Sheet combined with a transfer pen and transfer paper, making the setup process straightforward even for beginners with no prior pattern-transfer experience.

Difficulty and Suitability

Rated as a beginner level project, Lunar Star Dust is an excellent starting point for those new to embroidery. The limited colour palette of just two thread colours, the manageable 19.5 x 19.5 cm design size, and the use of only three fundamental stitch types make this pattern approachable without sacrificing visual impact. The inclusion of both a colour guide and a technical chart in the PDF ensures that stitchers of all experience levels can follow along with confidence.

Pattern Format and Access

This is a free downloadable PDF available directly from DMC. It includes a full colour diagram, a technical stitch chart, a colour and thread code guide, and bilingual instructions in English and French. The pattern is part of DMC's broader Interg
