Product Description

Lucy the Labrador is man's (and woman's!) best friend. She'll have your slippers ready for when you get home and will try very hard not to bite the postman! And best of all, subject to some serious training, she'll even put the kids to bed and put the washing on!

She's also dating Daniel the Spaniel - shhhh!

An easy to follow, delightful pattern for your very own Lucy the Labrador. The pattern is 6 pages long and contains a little tutorial on how to gather a cast on seam if this technique is not familiar to you.

The pattern is written for DK weight yarn but you can easily substitute with worsted weight yarn and 3.75mm needles.

Lucy the Labrador Knitted Toy

What is Being Made

Lucy the Labrador is a knitted stuffed toy dog designed by Penny Connor. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a small decorative or play toy measuring approximately 15cm (6 inches) in height from the bottom of the body to the tops of the ears when knitted to standard tension. The finished toy can be positioned with legs in a standing pose, which increases the overall height slightly. Lucy is suitable as a handmade gift, nursery decoration, or collectible amigurumi-style toy.

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental shaping techniques essential for toy construction. The pattern utilizes increases to build volume and form the three-dimensional shape of the dog's body, head, and limbs. Knitters will work with standard flat knitting methods, building pieces that are later assembled together. The pattern is designed for intermediate knitters, indicating it requires understanding of basic shaping principles and assembly techniques beyond simple stockinette stitch projects.

Stitches Used

The pattern incorporates increase stitches as a primary shaping element. The abbreviation "Inc" refers to increasing by knitting into the front of a stitch while keeping the original stitch on the left-hand needle, creating an additional stitch without binding off. This technique allows knitters to add stitches strategically throughout the pattern to shape Lucy's body, creating the rounded forms characteristic of a stuffed toy dog.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: DK weight yarn (approximately 1 x 50g ball based on the pattern requirements)
  • Needles: 3.25mm knitting needles as the primary tool
  • Optional: 3.25mm crochet hook (noted as optional in the pattern)
  • Additional supplies: Stuffing material (for filling the completed toy)

Yarn and Needle Substitution

The pattern is written for DK weight yarn with 3.25mm needles, but Penny Connor provides flexibility for crafters who prefer different yarn weights. Knitters can substitute worsted weight yarn with 3.75mm needles to create a slightly larger version of Lucy. This substitution option allows crafters to work with yarn they may already have on hand while maintaining the integrity of the pattern's construction method.
