Product Description
As part of my trip to Oregon for the Lantern Moon Retreat, we thought it would be fun to tie in with a design using yarn from a local dyer, such as Lorajean Kelley of Knitted Wit yarns.
When I saw this gorgeous shade of yellow in the package she sent me, I was hooked. I knew it would be the perfect pop of color to stick out of a denim jacket in spring or my big toggle coat through the winter.
Her delicate 2-ply Welterweight Rambouillet is a perfect choice for intricate cables, rustic enough to add some texture but distinct enough to show off the motif. And THE COLOR!
I decided to have fun with ribs, cables and lace on these. The medallion motif that moves from one side of the hand to the other, and the stockinette and ribbed sections play off of one another. As with most of my patterns, the motif is simpler than you think - so it’s fun to knit and quick enough that you can work on them for a few nights and be wearing them by next week.
Other listed yarns are suggested substitutes.
Ginger Beer Mitts by BabyCocktails
What Is Being Made
The Ginger Beer Mitts are a pair of fingerless mitts designed to add a pop of color and feminine detail to winter outfits. These mitts feature an intricate cable and lace medallion detail that slants toward the outer edge of each hand, creating visual interest while maintaining a clean stockinette panel for the thumbs. The finished mitts measure 7.5 inches (with options for 8 and 8.5 inches) around the wrist and extend 11 inches from top to bottom edge, making them a versatile accessory suitable for layering under winter coats or denim jackets.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This intermediate-level knitting project incorporates several advanced techniques to create its distinctive aesthetic. The primary stitch patterns include:
- Cable and lace medallion: An intricate combination of cable twists and openwork lace creates the focal point detail on each mitt
- 1x1 ribbing: Used to frame the design and provide structure around the wrist opening
- Stockinette stitch: Forms the thumb panels and creates contrast against the patterned sections
The cable and lace medallion is strategically positioned to slant off toward the outer edge of the hand, creating an asymmetrical design that remains interesting both during the knitting process and when worn. This placement allows the stockinette thumb panel to remain uninterrupted, providing a comfortable and clean finish for this frequently-used section of the mitt.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ginger Beer Mitts are designed to work with sport weight yarn. The pattern is shown in Knitted Wit Welterweight Rambouillet in the colorway Yellow Brick Road, which features 100% wool construction. One skein contains 350 yards, and the finished pair of mitts uses approximately 175 yards, leaving yarn for potential future projects.
Needles and Notions
This pattern requires US #4 (3.5mm) needles, or whatever size is necessary to achieve the specified gauge. Knitters may choose between double-pointed needles or circular needles worked using the magic loop method, depending on personal preference. Additional notions include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats, a cable needle for executing the cable twists, a darning needle for weaving in ends, and either a stitch holder or waste yarn for securing stitches during construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 6 stitches and 8 rows per 1 inch in stockinette stitch, and 7 stitches per 1 inch in 1x1 ribbing, measured on blocked fabric. Three sizes are available: 7.5 inches, 8 inches, and 8.5 inches around the wrist, accommodating different hand sizes while maintaining the 11-inch length from cuff to bottom edge. Achieving proper gauge is essential for ensuring the mitts fit correctly and the cable and lace medallion displays as intended.
