Product Description

A chic and multipurpose hat knit from the crown down to the brim, this hat is playfulness itself. It does not require any special yarn at any special gauge. Rather, it allows you to choose your own yarn, gauge, and special effect trim, and work with that. The Fur Stitch is explained thoroughly, and allows some freedom in the yarn chosen for it; you'll have many hours of enjoyment using up stash and planning yarn combination's.

Yarn Gauge is not crucial to this hat. Pick a soft yarn and knit it with a firm tension to enable the hat to stand and hold its shape. The amount of yarn required will vary depending on the gauge your yarn knits to. Yardage required is included in pattern. It varies from 120 meters to 300 meters depending on gauge.

Needles One set of five double-pointed needles (DPNs); 16” circular needles: one the same size as the DPNs and one a full mm smaller. Refer to the yarn ball-band to determine the size of needles. If you are a loose knitter, move down a size.

Fur Trimmed Pillbox Hat by Robin Hunter

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern from independent designer Robin Hunter presents a classic pillbox hat with optional fur trim detailing. The hat is constructed using a top-down knitting method, beginning from the crown and working downward to create a structured, hat-like silhouette. The design offers optional wiring or stiffener integration at the top of the side band to enhance the hat's ability to hold its shape and maintain a crisp, defined appearance.

Construction Method and Techniques

The Fur Trimmed Pillbox Hat employs a crown-down construction technique, a popular method in hat knitting that allows for seamless shaping from the top of the head downward. This approach provides excellent control over the fit and allows knitters to try on the hat as it develops. The pattern includes optional structural reinforcement through wiring or stiffening materials inserted at the top of the side band, which is a professional finishing technique that helps the hat maintain its distinctive pillbox shape and prevents sagging or collapsing.

Sizing and Customization

The pattern provides four standard sizes based on head circumference measurements:

  • Size S: 21" head measurement, 6½" diameter across top
  • Size M: 22" head measurement, 7" diameter across top
  • Size L: 23" head measurement, 7¼" diameter across top
  • Size XL: 24" head measurement, 7½" diameter across top

For custom sizing, the pattern includes a mathematical formula allowing knitters to personalize the fit. Measure head circumference just above the eyebrows, keeping the tape parallel to the floor, then divide that measurement by 3.14 (pi) to calculate the diameter across the top. Round to the nearest ¼" for precise customization.

Yarn and Materials

The pattern calls for varied yarn weights, offering flexibility in material selection. The designer emphasizes choosing a soft yarn and knitting with firm tension to enable the hat to stand properly and hold its structured shape. Gauge is noted as not crucial to this particular design, making it more forgiving for knitters of different experience levels. The specific yardage required will vary depending on the gauge achieved and yarn weight selected. Knitters will also need needles appropriate to their chosen yarn weight and optional wiring or stiffening materials if they choose to incorporate the structural reinforcement feature.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic techniques. The crown-down construction and shaping required to create the pillbox silhouette require solid foundational skills, though the flexible gauge requirements make the project more accessible than strictly gauge-dependent patterns.
