When I spent watching people paragliding in Eastern Switzerland, I saw lots of butterflies. The canton of Appenzell has for „butterfly“ a special word:
Flickflauder (flɪkflaʊdeːɐ)
This inspired me to design this triangular shawl. The body of the shawl is knitted in stockinette, surrounded by a lace border with butterflies. The lace is knitted on both sides. Therefore it‘s recommended for intermediate knitters.
The lace includes gathered stitches. In the pattern is a tutorial included how to knit this specific stitch.
The instructions are charted and written.
Yardage main colour: 218 yards / 200m contrasting colour: 306 yards / 280m (I recommend to use the lighter colour as the contrasting colour, as it will be used for the lace.)
Finished measurements wingspan 53 inches/ 135cm depth 19.5 inches/ 50cm

Materials and Tools
The Flickflauder shawl is knit using 4-ply yarn (fingering weight), specifically Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Pure, which is composed of 100% Merino Superwash fiber. This yarn choice provides approximately 526 meters (575 yards) per unit, offering excellent stitch definition for both the stockinette body and the intricate lace borders.
The project requires 4.0 mm (US #6) circular needles at a minimum length of 80 cm (32 inches) to accommodate the shawl's width during construction. Additional notions include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and 4 stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points throughout the knitting process.
Gauge
The recommended gauge is 24 stitches and 36 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in stockinette stitch after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements and ensuring the lace pattern displays correctly.
