Project Overview

The Endless Roses Christmas Stocking (DN1017) is an advanced knitting project designed as a decorative holiday piece. Inspired by traditional Norwegian knitting from Selbu, this stocking features the iconic "endless roses" motif—a classic design element found in authentic Norwegian hats, mittens, socks, and sweaters. The design draws from historical pieces displayed in the Selbu museum, bringing authentic Scandinavian knitting heritage into a contemporary Christmas decoration.

Finished Dimensions

This is a generously sized stocking with a finished circumference of approximately 16 inches and a total length of 23.5 inches from top to toe, making it a substantial and impressive holiday decoration.

Knitting Techniques Used

• Broken Rib — Creates the textured cuff at the top of the stocking
• Two-Color Knitting — Allows the endless roses motif to stand out with contrasting colors worked simultaneously throughout the design
• Catching Floats — A stranded colorwork technique that manages the yarn floats created when working with two colors, ensuring neat and secure stitching on the inside of the fabric
• Flap Heel Construction — A traditional heel shaping method with decreases worked as they appear on authentic Bunad stockings from Norwegian national costumes
• Round Toe — Creates a finished, shaped toe rather than a flat closure
• I-Cord Hanging Loop — An applied cord detail that allows the stocking to be hung as a decoration

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The stocking employs classic knitting stitches combined with stranded colorwork patterning. The endless roses motif is created through two-color knitting, where contrasting yarn colors are carried and worked to form the traditional Norwegian rose design. The broken rib cuff provides textural interest and elasticity at the stocking's opening.

Yarn and Materials

The sample stocking is worked in heavy worsted weight yarn, though the pattern notes that finer yarn weights could be substituted to create a smaller version. Aran weight yarn is also suitable for this project. The two-color stranded colorwork technique requires yarn in two contrasting colors to bring out the endless roses pattern.
