Dreams of Granada Blanket by Triona Murphy

Project Overview

The Dreams of Granada Blanket is an advanced knitting project designed by Triona Murphy that creates a beautiful square throw or baby blanket. This knitted blanket features architectural cable details inspired by the iconic arches found in Granada, Spain. The design works equally well as a decorative couch throw or as a thoughtful new baby gift, combining visual interest with elegant simplicity.

What Is Being Made

This is a square blanket available in three finished sizes: Small (32 x 32 inches or 81 x 81 cm), Medium (38 x 38 inches or 97 x 97 cm), and Large (44 x 44 inches or 112 x 112 cm). The blanket features cable detailing that echoes the architectural arches characteristic of Granada's famous landmarks, creating visual depth without overwhelming the overall design.

Knitting Techniques

The Dreams of Granada Blanket employs a distinctive construction method that works from the outside edges toward the center. Stitches are cast on for the entire circumference of the blanket, and the piece is then completed using regular decreases worked inward until only a few stitches remain. This technique creates a unique geometric approach to blanket construction and requires advanced knitting skills to execute successfully.

Stitches and Stitch Details

While the complete stitch pattern is detailed in the full PDF instructions, the blanket prominently features cable stitches as its signature design element. These cables provide the visual reference to Granada's architectural arches and are integrated throughout the blanket design to add texture and interest to the finished piece.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Knit Picks Brava Worsted in the colorway Dreams of Granada Tidepool (100% acrylic; 219 yards/200 meters per 100g skein). Project requires 5 skeins for Small, 7 skeins for Medium, or 9 skeins for Large. Total yardage needed is approximately 900 yards (820 meters) for Small, 1,400 yards (1,280 meters) for Medium, or 1,800 yards (1,640 meters) for Large. Worsted weight yarn from other manufacturers may be substituted if yardage requirements are met.
  • Needles: US #8 (5.0 mm) circular needle measuring 60 inches long. Alternatively, knitters may join cables from an interchangeable needle set to achieve the required length, or use multiple circular needles of the same size.

Yarn Weight and Fiber Content

This pattern is designed for both DK and worsted weight yarns, though the materials list specifies worsted weight yarn. The recommended yarn, Knit Picks Brava Worsted, is composed of 100% acrylic fiber, making it a durable, easy-care option suitable for blankets that may require frequent washing. The worsted weight creates a fabric with good drape and warmth while remaining manageable for the advanced techniques required.

Skill Level

This is an advanced knitting project best suited for experienced knitters. The combination of cable work, the unique outside-in construction method, and the need to manage decreases across a large circumference require solid foundational knitting skills and comfort with more complex pattern work.
