Product Description

For World Mental Health Day we’ve collaborated with embroidery artist and designer Emily June to bring you a series of uplifting mantras you can stitch as part of your own self-care or to encourage loved ones. The design features the words Strong surrounded by flowers and a bee. Bees symbolise hard work and are a reminder to be resilient in order to achieve your goals. Our clear patterns and quality supplies make it easy for you to complete your project. Colourfast and fade resistant DMC threads keep stitches looking vibrant for generations to come. Emily June is a self-taught embroidery artist who began embroidering in 2016 when she was battling a severe anxiety disorder. She found embroidery to be calming, rewarding, and the perfect outlet for her creativity. With a background in Illustration and Design, Emily opened her shop with the desire to introduce others to the magical world of embroidery and to open the conversation surrounding mental health. Her work is inspired by nature, fantasy, and her love of people.

DMC x Emily June "Strong" Embroidery Pattern – Free Downloadable PDF

The DMC x Emily June "Strong" pattern is a free downloadable embroidery PDF created through a collaboration between DMC and designer Emily June. This intermediate-level hand embroidery design is part of the DMC Library collection and is available as an instant digital download, making it easy to begin stitching right away.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a hand-embroidered decorative piece centered around the word or theme of "Strong", reflecting the expressive, illustrative style characteristic of Emily June's collaborative work with DMC. The finished embroidery is designed to be displayed as a standalone textile artwork, suitable for framing or hoop display. The design features a rich, multi-color composition guided by a detailed colour guide and technical chart included across the pattern pages.

Techniques Used

As an intermediate embroidery pattern, this design calls upon a range of hand embroidery techniques that go beyond basic stitching. Embroiderers working at this level are expected to be comfortable with controlling thread tension, blending colors, and executing both outline and fill stitches with confidence. Typical techniques found in DMC x Emily June collaborations of this style include:

  • Outline and lettering stitches to define the central typographic or illustrative elements
  • Fill stitching to build up color and texture within design areas
  • Color blending using multiple DMC thread shades to create depth and dimension
  • Working from a technical chart and colour diagram to accurately place each thread color within the design

The inclusion of a dedicated colour guide / diagramme en couleur and a separate technical chart / diagramme within the PDF means stitchers can cross-reference thread placement with precision, which is especially helpful when managing the large number of colors referenced in this design.

Stitches Used

While the PDF's extracted content focuses primarily on the color guide and technical diagram rather than an explicit stitch key, the intermediate difficulty rating and the style of DMC x Emily June patterns suggest the use of a variety of classic hand embroidery stitches. These commonly include:

  • Back stitch – ideal for clean outlines and lettering
  • Satin stitch – used to fill solid areas with smooth, lustrous coverage
  • French knots – for textural detail and decorative accents
  • Stem stitch – for flowing curved lines and outlines
  • Split stitch – often used as a foundation for padded areas or as a fine outline stitch

Stitchers are encouraged to consult the technical chart included in the PDF for precise stitch placement guidance specific to this design.

Colors and Materials

The colour guide within the pattern references an extensive palette of DMC stranded cotton embroidery thread, with color codes organized across multiple reference points throughout the diagram. The pattern uses a wide range of shades, as indicated by the numerous thread references visible in the color guide — including codes across the A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H groupings of the DMC color system — suggesting a vibrant and detailed multi-toned composition.

  • Thread: DMC stranded cotton embroidery floss, multiple colors as specified in the colour guide
  • Fabric: Evenweave or plain weave embroidery fabric, typically cotton or linen, suitable for surface embroidery
  • Needles: Embroidery needles appropriate for stranded cotton thread, commonly sizes 3–9 depending on the number of strands used
  • Hoop: An embroidery hoop or frame to keep fabric taut during stitching is strongly recommended

Because this is a DMC pattern, all thread colors are designed to coordinate with DMC's own range of stranded cotton floss, ensuring accurate color matching when purchasing materials. The generous number of thread shades referenced in the colour diagram reflects the layered, illustrative aesthetic that defines the Emily June collaboration series.
