Capes, Hat, Scarf & Wrist Warmers Knitted in King Cole Gypsy – Pattern 4358

King Cole pattern 4358 is a downloadable PDF knitting pattern offering four coordinating accessories in super chunky weight yarn: a cape with cable borders, a hat, a scarf, and wrist warmers. The pattern is rated Easy Knit and is suitable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable working cables and basic shaping. The cape is worked in two matching pieces (back and front alike), making construction straightforward even for those newer to garment knitting. Sizes available are small, medium, and large, giving a good range of fit across the set.

Every King Cole pattern purchase includes a donation to the Pink Ribbon Foundation, supporting breast cancer awareness and care.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

All four designs are knitted in King Cole Gypsy, a super chunky yarn that works up quickly on large needles and produces a warm, substantial fabric ideal for cold-weather accessories. The pattern calls for 10mm knitting needles as the primary needle size, along with a cable needle (CN) for working the cable panel sections on the cape borders.

Tension

The stated tension is 10 stitches and 14 rows to 10cm (4 inches) over pattern using 10mm needles. As with all knitting patterns, achieving the correct tension is essential, particularly for the cape where stitch counts are carefully shaped. If your tension produces fewer stitches than stated, switch to a finer needle; if it produces more stitches, switch to a larger needle.

Cape with Cable Borders

Construction and Shaping

The cape is the centrepiece of this pattern set and is worked in two identical pieces — back and front alike — which are then joined. This symmetrical construction simplifies the making process considerably. Each piece is cast on using 10mm needles with stitch counts of 67, 73, or 79 stitches depending on the chosen size (small, medium, or large).

Shaping is achieved through a decrease row that reduces the stitch count significantly — for example, working K2tog decreases at regular intervals across the row to bring the fabric in toward the neckline. The decrease row produces 67, 73, or 79 stitches after working, and the fabric then continues on 10mm needles in the established pattern.

Stitches and Techniques Used

  • Cable pattern (C4B and C4F): The cape features prominent cable borders worked using both C4B (cable 4 back) and C4F (cable 4 front) techniques. C4B involves slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle held at the back of the work, knitting the next 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle — creating a right-leaning twist. C4F mirrors this with the cable needle held at the front, producing a left-leaning twist. These cables add beautiful textural detail to the borders of the cape.
  • Stocking stitch (St-St): The main body of the cape is worked in classic stocking stitch — knit on right side rows, purl on wrong side rows — creating a smooth, clean fabric that contrasts well with the cable borders.
  • 1x1 Rib: Used for neat, stretchy edging sections. The rib is worked over two rows: Row 1 is *K1, P1, repeat to last stitch, K1*; Row 2 is P1, *K1, P1, repeat to end*. This alternating knit-purl structure gives elasticity and a tidy finish.
  • K2tog decrease: Used in the shaping row to reduce stitch count evenly across the width of each piece, creating the fitted silhouette of the cape.
  • M1 (Make One): An increase stitch used where the pattern requires adding stitches. Worked by picking up the horizontal loop between the last
