Product Description
Bubbles’ Wrap starts out as a delicate, triangle-shaped, lace-weight version of the beloved granny square and finishes with a soft border that plays nicely even without blocking.
Bubbles’ Wrap was named for my sweet mother-in-law. I needed a “mindless” project to work on while we sorted through her cancer treatments and this is what I created.
The wrap works nicely with a variety of weights and amounts of yarn. The pattern includes recipe information for making a larger or smaller wrap, heavier weights of yarn, or for using a specific amount of yarn.
The design uses double crochets (dc) and chain (ch) stitches.
Thanks to my brilliant design partner, Julie Blagojevich, for the design handholding and suggestions.
Special thanks to Pam, Laura, Pat, Sylvia, Elizabeth, Laurel, Sarah, Angie, Kyla, Rochelle, Pam (yes!), Kristin, Steff, and Jan for their sharp eyes and speedy hooks for helping to find the glitches.
Bubbles' Wrap Crochet Shawl by Gina Lynette
Project Overview
Bubbles' Wrap is an intermediate-level crochet shawl design created by independent designer Gina Lynette. This triangular wrap combines the structural appeal of granny squares with delicate lace-weight construction, resulting in a versatile garment that works beautifully with or without blocking. The design was inspired by personal meaning, created as a meditative project during a significant life moment.
Construction and Design Features
The shawl begins as a lace-weight interpretation of the classic granny square motif and progresses into a finished triangle shape. A soft border completes the piece, adding a refined edge that enhances the overall drape and appearance. The design is thoughtfully constructed to maintain its shape and beauty even without the additional step of blocking, though blocking is an option for those who prefer a more defined finish.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This project utilizes fundamental crochet techniques centered around cluster stitches, which form the foundation of the granny square-inspired construction. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that crafters should be comfortable with reading crochet patterns and executing consistent stitch work. The gauge for this project is 6.5 clusters and 13 rows measuring 4 inches (10.16 cm) square, which is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions.
Yarn and Materials
Yarn: Miss Babs "Isadora" in a Merino and Silk Blend, lace weight. The project requires 600 yards (549 meters) total, using two hanks of 65 grams each in the colorway Sweet Baby Girl.
Tools and Notions: The pattern calls for a size F hook (3.75 mm), a darning needle for weaving in ends, and blocking tools if the crafter chooses to block the finished piece.
Finished Dimensions
- Pre-blocking: 58 inches (147 cm) along the top edge and 29 inches (74 cm) from top to the point of the triangle
- Post-blocking: Approximately 60 inches along the top edge (final dimensions expand slightly with blocking)
Skill Level and Craftsmanship
Rated as intermediate difficulty, Bubbles' Wrap is suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to work with lace-weight yarn and execute more intricate stitch patterns. The "mindless" quality of the repetitive cluster work makes it an excellent project for meditative crafting, while the beautiful results demonstrate the sophistication achievable with careful tension and attention to detail.
