What is Being Made

Andamento Socks are a pair of women's socks designed to showcase the natural color variations in variegated yarn. The pattern is available in three sizes: US Women's 6–7 (Small), 8–9 (Medium), and 10–11 (Large). These socks are engineered to be both visually striking and durable for everyday wear, with the design specifically created to enhance and celebrate the streaks and pools of color found in variegated sock yarns.

Techniques and Construction

The Andamento Socks are knit from the top down using a short-row heel construction method, which creates a fitted heel without the need for traditional heel flaps. This technique allows for a custom fit and efficient use of yarn. The pattern features slipped stitches arranged in flowing motifs that snake across the fabric, creating visual movement that draws the eye across color variations in the yarn. The term "andamento" refers to the visual flow of individual pieces within a mosaic, and this design principle is applied to the sock construction to maximize the aesthetic impact of variegated colorways.

All stitch motifs in the pattern are provided as charts, making them straightforward to follow despite their visual complexity. Size-specific charts are included to ensure the instep pattern is completed correctly for each size.

Stitches Used

The primary stitches in this pattern include:

Materials

Yarn: The pattern requires 360 yards of fingering-weight wool. The sample was knit in Malabrigo Sock in the colorway "Turner." The designer recommends using a heftier sock yarn to create a hard-wearing sock at the specified gauge, ensuring durability for regular wear.

Needles: US #2 (2.75 mm) needles are required, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge. Knitters may choose from double-pointed needles, two circular needles, or one long circular needle using the magic loop method, depending on personal preference.

Additional Tools: A darning needle is needed for weaving in ends and finishing.

Gauge

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 28 stitches by 40 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) measured in stockinet stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit across all three sizes.

Difficulty Level

Andamento Socks are rated as an intermediate project. While the charted stitch patterns may appear complex at first glance, the pattern itself is straightforward to execute. Knitters should be comfortable reading charts and working with double-pointed needles or circular needles, as well as understanding basic sock construction techniques such as short-row heels.
