Product Description
This hat was inspired by the YA novel “Delirium” by Lauren Oliver. A cabled ribbing transitions into a slouchy hat utilizing two lace patterns, making for a challenging knit that's perfect for any occasion. This hat uses all the tricks - lace, cables and changing stitch counts, and the stitch patterns are given as charts only. The slouchy nature of the hat is due to switching needle sizes and shifting from a cabled pattern to a more open lace pattern. Although it looks complicated, the hat works up quickly in aran yarn, so it's perfect for a last-minute gift.
Skills needed: knitting in the round, purling, increasing, decreasing, cabling and lace knitting. Gauge: 17 sts/22 rows over 4 in/10 cm in pattern using large needles. Sample shown was knit in Kettle Yarn Co Lomond Aran in "Ginger".
Amor Deliria Hat by Rachel C. Brown
What Is Being Made
The Amor Deliria is an advanced knit hat inspired by the YA novel "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver. This slouchy hat features a sophisticated construction combining cabled ribbing with two distinct lace patterns, creating a visually complex design that works up quickly despite its intricate appearance. The hat is suitable for any occasion and makes an excellent last-minute gift option.
Available Sizes
The pattern is offered in three sizes: Small (medium, large). The hat measures approximately 16.5 (18, 19.75) inches / 42 (45.75, 50) centimeters around unstretched, with stretch capacity to fit head circumferences of approximately 18 (20, 22) inches / 46 (51, 56) centimeters. The body circumference at gauge is approximately 22.5 (24.5, 26.25) inches / 57 (62.25, 66.75) centimeters.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced knit incorporates multiple essential techniques that make it a challenging but rewarding project. The construction requires proficiency in the following skills:
- Knitting in the round: The hat is worked circularly, a fundamental technique for seamless hat construction
- Cable knitting: Featured prominently in the ribbing transition, including techniques such as two over two right cross (2/2 RC) cable crosses
- Lace knitting: Two distinct lace patterns are incorporated throughout the hat body, requiring precision with yarn overs and decreases
- Increases and decreases: Essential shaping techniques used to create the slouchy silhouette and crown shaping
- Purling: Used in combination with knit stitches to create textured ribbing and pattern definition
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Amor Deliria hat is designed to work with aran or worsted weight yarn. The pattern was tested and photographed using Storied Yarns Bo Peep Worsted, a yarn composed of 100% merino fiber. This yarn weight choice allows the hat to work up quickly while still showcasing the intricate cable and lace details. The yardage requirement is 250 yards per 4 ounces of yarn.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it immediately accessible for digital devices and convenient for printing or reference during the knitting process.
