The MillaMia look, and what it asks of you

MillaMia patterns are quiet knits. The shaping does the work — a clean raglan line, a well-placed cable, a swing shape on a girl's coat — rather than busy stitch pattern or loud colour. That means two things for the knitter: the fabric is on show, so tension consistency matters more than usual, and the finishing is what separates a good result from a great one. The collection spans womenswear such as the Lykke, Rosita, Leka, Molly and Carola jumpers, the Leia cropped cardigan and Thea and Elina jackets, menswear like the Bertil cardigan, and an extensive children's section including the Cissi swing coat, Celine cardigan and Tobias hooded top. Homeware appears too, in cushions such as Honey and Nordic Nightscape.

Choosing your yarn weight

• Naturally Soft Merino (4 ply) — the classic MillaMia base. Fine, smooth and ideal for children's garments and cushions where you want crisp stitch definition. Expect a long knit on an adult sweater.
• Naturally Soft Aran — used for the Thea and Elina jackets and the Rosita and Molly jumpers. Fast, warm and the friendliest place to start.
• Naturally Soft Cotton — behind the Carola jumper; cool to wear, with more drape and no elasticity, so ribbing sits flatter.
• Naturally Soft Super Chunky — for statement jackets that come off the needles in a weekend or two.

Where to begin by experience

A first MillaMia project is best chosen by size rather than by difficulty rating. A cushion cover in merino gives you the yarn's behaviour, the tension and the seaming in a small, square, low-risk piece. A child's cardigan is next: real garment construction, buttonbands and set-in or raglan sleeves, but at a quarter of the stitch count of an adult version. From there an aran-weight adult jumper is a reasonable leap, and the fitted 4 ply women's designs are the long, rewarding haul.

Tension and sizing

Knit a 15cm tension square in the stated stitch, wash it as you will wash the garment, then measure across the middle. MillaMia patterns give finished measurements for every size; choose by measuring a jumper you already like across the chest and doubling it, not by dress size. Buy yarn to the metrage stated rather than a ball count, keep one dye lot, and put a spare ball aside if you plan to lengthen the body or sleeves — the smooth merino bases show a dye lot change clearly on a plain stocking stitch body.

Alongside single patterns there are multi-pattern e-books and books — the Baby Collection e-book, the Curiouser Collection for girls and The Close Knit Gang — which work out cheaper per design if you know you want several children's pieces. Baby and toddler knits in soft merino are the obvious gift here; a pair of wristwarmers such as the Eleonora pattern is the small, quick gift that still looks considered.

Blocking and aftercare

Merino blocks beautifully. Soak the finished pieces, roll in a towel, pin to the pattern's measurements and let them dry fully before seaming — edges stop curling and the seams line up almost by themselves. Mattress stitch in the project yarn is nearly invisible on smooth merino. Wash by hand in lukewarm water with a wool wash, never wring, and dry flat. Store folded; a knitted jacket on a hanger will drop at the shoulders.

Can I substitute another yarn? Yes, matching the weight and tension. A smooth, round wool or wool blend keeps the crisp look.

Which weight knits up fastest? Naturally Soft Super Chunky, then Aran; the 4 ply merino is the slowest but gives the finest fabric.
