Product Description
Ah, fingerless mitts. I love them, I do. Even though part of me thinks that fingerless mitts are, like, so 2006, the other part of me thinks, like, I totally don’t care.
This two-page pattern includes two sizes to fit a range of hands, and uses sport weight yarn. Two 50g balls of contrasting colors will make a pair of mitts. You should know how to read charts, knit in the round, knit, purl, cast on, bind off, increase and decrease.
If, by chance, you’ve never done any two-color knitting, this pattern is easy enough for your first stranded knitting project.
Zigzag Study Hall: Fingerless Mitts by Mandy Spoth
Project Overview
Zigzag Study Hall: Fingerless Mitts is a knitted fingerless mitt pattern designed by Mandy Spoth. These mitts serve as an excellent introduction to stranded knitting techniques, making them ideal for knitters looking to expand their colorwork skills. The playful study hall theme makes this project both functional and fun for students and crafters alike.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a pair of fingerless mitts—hand coverings that leave the fingers exposed while providing warmth and coverage to the palm, back of hand, and wrist area. The mitts feature a two-color stranded knitting design with a thumb gusset for a custom fit. The pattern is available in two sizes (Medium and Large) and uses the same stitch pattern for both, with sizing achieved through needle size adjustments rather than pattern modifications.
Knitting Techniques Used
The primary technique featured in this pattern is stranded knitting, also known as fair isle knitting. This colorwork method involves carrying two colors of yarn simultaneously across rounds, creating intricate geometric patterns. The pattern includes specific charted sections:
- Mitt Chart—the main colorwork pattern worked in the round
- Thumb Gusset Chart—increases worked while maintaining the stranded pattern for a custom thumb opening
Both charts are read from right to left on each round, following standard circular knitting conventions. The pattern emphasizes the importance of achieving correct gauge to ensure proper fit, as the sizing system relies on gauge adjustments rather than stitch count changes.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches worked in the round. The Mitt Chart sections are described as being 4 stitches wide, indicating a compact, detailed colorwork pattern. The stranded knitting technique requires managing two colors (main color and contrasting color) while working knit stitches in the round, creating a reversible fabric with floats on the inside.
Materials and Yarn
This pattern calls for Lanaloft Sports Weight yarn from Brown Sheep, a 100% wool yarn with 145 yards (133 meters) per 50-gram ball. One ball each of two colors is required:
- Main Color (MC): LL15S Roasted Pepper (red)
- Contrasting Color (CC): LL42S Sandstone Cove (oatmeal)
The sport weight yarn provides a lightweight, breathable fabric suitable for fingerless mitts. Additional materials include size-appropriate knitting needles (needle size varies by desired gauge and finished size), a stitch marker, a blunt tip darning needle for weaving in ends, and approximately ½ yard of smooth cotton waste yarn for the thumb gusset technique.
Finished Size and Gauge
The pattern is available in Medium and Large sizes. Rather than providing fixed finished measurements, the pattern uses a gauge-based sizing system where knitters select their needle size based on a provided size chart to achieve the correct gauge. This approach allows customization of the mitts to fit perfectly, as the stitch pattern remains identical for both sizes.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, reflecting the stranded knitting techniques required. While the pattern serves as an introduction to colorwork, successful completion requires proficiency with circular knitting, managing multiple colors, reading charts, and working increases for the thumb gusset. The emphasis on achieving correct gauge also indicates this is best suited for experienced knitters.
