Zephyr Cowl by Valerie Hobbs
Project Overview
The Zephyr Cowl is a lightweight knitted cowl designed by Valerie Hobbs as an elegant alternative to heavy winter scarves. This piece transitions beautifully between seasons, offering gentle warmth for spring breezes and cool evenings without the bulk of traditional winter cowls. The finished cowl measures 42 inches in circumference and 7 inches in height, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wearing as a standalone neckpiece.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires 350 yards of fingering weight yarn. The pattern is shown worked in Malabrigo "Finito," a luxurious 100% merino wool yarn that provides softness and breathability ideal for a spring-weight cowl. Two 50-gram skeins (200 yards each) of Malabrigo "Finito" in the colorway Archangel are used for the sample project. Fingering weight yarn creates a delicate fabric with excellent drape while maintaining structure.
Additional materials include a U.S. size 5 (3.75mm) circular needle measuring 32 inches (80 centimeters) in length, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, a cable needle for cable techniques, and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends. Needle size may be adjusted as needed to achieve the correct gauge.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 26 stitches over 4 inches when measured in the stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the finished measurements and ensuring the cowl drapes correctly around the neck.
Knitting Techniques
The Zephyr Cowl is classified as an advanced beginner project, making it accessible to knitters with some foundational experience while introducing or reinforcing several important techniques:
- Knitting in the Round: The cowl is constructed using circular needles, allowing the knitter to work continuously in rounds rather than flat rows. This seamless construction creates a smooth, finished appearance without requiring seaming.
- Decreases: Strategic decreases shape the cowl and create textural elements within the design.
- Yarnovers: Yarn overs add lacy openness and visual interest to the stitch pattern, contributing to the lightweight aesthetic of the finished piece.
- Simple Cable: A basic cable technique is incorporated into the pattern, adding dimension and a traditional knitted texture that contrasts with the lacy elements.
Design and Construction
The combination of yarnovers, decreases, and simple cable stitches creates a sophisticated stitch pattern that balances openwork with textured elements. This blend of techniques produces a cowl with visual depth and movement while maintaining the light, airy quality appropriate for transitional seasons. The circular construction ensures a seamless, professional finish that sits comfortably around the neck.
