Yseulte Hat by Corrine Walcher
Overview
The Yseulte Hat is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Corrine Walcher for the Maryland Fiber Art Studio Tour in December 2019. This knit hat showcases beautiful colorwork and stitch techniques, creating a sophisticated accessory that works equally well with premium yarn from multiple independent dyers. The designer offers coordinating pieces, including a matching cowl and fingerless gloves, allowing crafters to create a complete set.
What You'll Make
This project produces a finished hat measuring 18 inches around when unstretched and 23 inches when stretched, with a height of 9 inches. The hat is designed to fit most adult heads comfortably and showcases stitch definition through its construction method.
Yarn and Materials
The Yseulte Hat is designed to work beautifully with worsted and aran weight yarns from multiple fiber artists and farms. The sample was created using Avalon Springs Farm Pendragon Worsted, a 100% superwash merino wool yarn that provides 200 yards per 4 ounces. The sample hat requires approximately 110 yards of yarn, though total yardage may vary depending on your chosen yarn and finished dimensions.
Alternative yarn options include:
- Flying Goat Farm LiViLy
- Dancing Leaf Farm Charleston
- Wandering Wool Heights
- Withers Wool Farm yarn
- Handspun yarns in compatible weights
Needles and Gauge
This pattern requires a set of 5 double-pointed needles or a 16-inch circular needle in size 6 US (4.00 mm), or whatever size is needed to obtain proper gauge. The gauge is 16 stitches and 24 rows per 4 inches when measured in blocked stockinette stitch and knit in the round. Achieving correct gauge is essential for proper fit.
Techniques and Stitches
The Yseulte Hat is an intermediate project that employs several fundamental and decorative knitting techniques. The hat is constructed in the round, which creates seamless fabric and allows for consistent stitch definition throughout the piece.
Core Stitches Used:
- Knit (K): The primary stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P): Used to create textural contrast and stitch definition
- Knit Two Together (K2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Purl Two Together (P2tog): A decrease worked in purl stitch
- Slip, Slip, Knit (SSK): A left-leaning decrease that creates balanced decreases when paired with K2tog
Cable Technique:
The pattern includes cable work, specifically a 2/2 Left Cable (2/2 LC), which is created by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle and holding them in front, then knitting the next 2 stitches, followed by knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This technique creates the twisted, rope-like texture characteristic of cable knit designs and adds visual interest and dimension to the finished hat.
Construction Method:
The hat is worked in the round using either double-pointed needles or a circular needle. This method eliminates the need for seaming and creates seamless fabric. The pattern uses standard abbreviations and markers to track pattern repeats and shaping sections, making it accessible to intermediate knitters who are comfortable following written instructions with decreases and cable techniques.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this project is suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with cables and strategic decreases. The combination of stockinette stitch, purl details, cable work, and in-the-round construction provides an engaging challenge without overwhelming complexity.
