Yellow Reversible Knit Scarf by Iglinz Crafts
What Is Being Made
Yellow is a completely reversible knit scarf designed by Iglinz Crafts. Despite its name suggesting otherwise, this scarf showcases a unique design philosophy where both sides of the finished piece look identical. The scarf measures 22cm (8 3/4 inches) wide and the sample shown achieves a length of 160cm (64 inches), making it a versatile accessory suitable for various styling preferences.
Craft and Techniques
This is a knitting project ideal for beginners who have already mastered fundamental knitting skills. The pattern requires knowledge of basic knit and purl stitches, along with the ability to slip stitches for edge finishing. The reversible quality of this scarf is achieved through a carefully constructed stitch pattern that creates identical textures on both the right and wrong sides, eliminating the need to worry about which side faces outward when wearing.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The fundamental stitch creating the primary fabric texture
- Purl (p): The reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination to create the reversible pattern
- Slip stitch (sl): Applied purlwise with yarn held in back, used exclusively as an edge stitch for neat scarf borders
The stitch pattern operates on a simple 2-stitch repeat, offering flexibility for customization. Knitters can adjust the scarf width by casting on any multiple of 2 stitches, allowing for personal preference in finished dimensions.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern is written for fingering weight yarn, specifically fairAlpaka Baby Alpaka Fingering weight (100% alpaca, 200m per 50g or 219 yards per 7.76 ounces). The sample scarf required 4 balls of yarn, totaling 688 meters (752 yards) for the 160cm length shown. The pattern notes that it can be adapted to work with any yarn weight, providing versatility for yarn substitution.
Needles: US 2 1/2 (3mm) knitting needles are recommended for the fingering weight yarn specified.
Additional Notions: A yarn needle is required for weaving in ends upon completion.
Pattern Details and Gauge
The gauge for this pattern is 36 stitches and 42 rows measured over the stitch pattern, equaling 10cm (4 inches) in both width and length. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions, though the adaptable nature of the pattern means slight variations in final size are acceptable depending on yarn choice and individual gauge.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, Yellow is accessible to knitters with basic skills. The straightforward stitch combination of knit and purl stitches, combined with the simple 2-stitch repeat, makes this an excellent project for building confidence in fundamental knitting techniques while creating a sophisticated, wearable finished object.
