Product Description
These more-ish mitts tick all the boxes: fun to make, with a fast-moving stitch pattern and quirky shaping; great to wear, as the super-stretchy ribbing combines with bias knitting to hug your hands; and a perfect use for that special skein of handpainted yarn, which will be shown off to great effect by travelling columns of slipped stitches.
Wraparound takes the stitch pattern from my Runaround mitts and moves it in intriguing new directions. This design plays well with any variegated yarn, but is particularly intriguing with yarn that tends to form one-row stripes in a narrow range of colours.
Sizes range from child to large adult, with most using less than 50g of sock yarn.
Wraparound Mitts by Robynn Weldon
What is Being Made
Wraparound mitts are fingerless hand coverings designed by Robynn Weldon that combine functionality with decorative appeal. These mitts feature a unique wraparound construction that creates a bias knit structure, allowing the garment to hug the hands with exceptional stretch and comfort. The design is available in four sizes to fit children, teens, and adults in medium and large proportions, with wrist measurements ranging from 5 to 8.5 inches (12.5 to 20.5 centimeters).
Techniques and Construction Methods
The wraparound mitts employ several intermediate-level knitting techniques that create both visual interest and functional stretch. Working in the round forms the foundation of construction, typically using either double-pointed needles or a circular needle with the magic loop method. The bias knitting technique is central to the design, creating the characteristic diagonal grain that allows the mitts to stretch and conform to the wearer's hands. This bias construction works synergistically with the ribbed structure to provide superior elasticity.
The pattern incorporates slipped stitches arranged in travelling columns, which serve a dual purpose: they create a visually interesting stitch pattern while also showcasing handpainted or variegated yarn to striking effect. Increasing and decreasing techniques are used throughout to shape the mitts appropriately and achieve the quirky shaping that characterizes the design.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch pattern is a slip-stitch broken rib, which combines the elasticity of ribbing with the textural interest of slipped stitches. This stitch pattern is fast-moving and engaging to knit, making the project enjoyable despite its intermediate difficulty level. The broken rib structure, enhanced by the slip-stitch technique, creates columns of texture that draw the eye while maintaining the stretch necessary for a well-fitting mitt.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The wraparound mitts are designed for 4-ply fingering weight yarn, a fine yarn that allows for detailed stitch definition and a refined finished fabric. Yardage requirements vary by size: child size requires 155 yards (140 meters), teen and adult medium sizes need 180 yards (165 meters) and 220 yards (200 meters) respectively, while adult large requires 270 yards (250 meters). The sample shown uses Easyknits Superbiffle in Devil's Breath, a 100% wool yarn available at 400 yards per 100 grams, making it an excellent choice for showcasing the slip-stitch pattern.
Construction requires US 2 (2.75mm) double-pointed needles or a circular needle measuring at least 32 inches (80 centimeters) long for magic loop knitting. Additional supplies include a darning needle for finishing, two stitch markers to track pattern repeats and shaping points, and either a stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches during construction.
Gauge and Fit
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 37 stitches by 48 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) when measured over the slip-stitch broken rib in its unstretched state. This gauge measurement is important for achieving proper fit, as the super-stretchy ribbing and bias construction will expand significantly when worn, allowing the mitts to accommodate the range of wrist sizes specified for each size option.
Difficulty Level and Skill Requirements
Rated as intermediate difficulty with a PG skill level, the wraparound mitts are suitable for knitters with foundational knowledge who are ready to expand their technique repertoire. The project develops competency in working in the round, managing slipped stitches, executing increases and decreases, and understanding how bias knitting creates stretch and movement in a finished garment. The fast-moving stitch pattern and fun shaping make this an engaging project that rewards the knitter with a practical, wearable result.
