Wood Sprite, Snow Sprite Hat - Child
What is Being Made
The Wood Sprite, Snow Sprite Hat is a child's ear flap hat designed by Cheryl Andrews, available in three sizes to fit children ages 1-2 (small), 3-5 (medium), and 6-8 (large). This charming knitted hat features a distinctive elfin peak at the crown and is engineered for warmth and wind protection with double-layer ear flaps, integrated ties, and a lined head band. The finished measurements range from 17 inches to 20 inches in circumference, with the hat designed to fit snugly for optimal insulation.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level knitting project is constructed seamlessly using the knit-in-the-round method, eliminating the need for finishing seams. The hat is worked using circular needles and double-pointed needles, with the crown shaping creating the signature soft elfin peak. The double-layer ear flaps and lined head band are integrated into the construction process, providing extra warmth and comfort for active children. The design demonstrates thoughtful engineering for a functional, cozy winter accessory.
Stitches and Stitch Details
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 19 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches when knitting in the round. The construction utilizes stitch holders or extra double-pointed needles to manage stitches during the shaping of the ear flaps and peak. The seamless, in-the-round construction method creates a smooth, professional finish throughout the garment.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Yarn: Worsted weight yarn is required, with yardage varying by size: approximately 165 yards for the small size, 170 yards for medium, and 180 yards for the large size. The sample hats were knitted in Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted weight yarn, a blend of 85% wool and 15% mohair, available in colors such as Cream and Sable. Each skein provides 190 yards at 4 ounces.
Needles and Notions: The project requires two size 6 circular needles—one measuring 16 inches and one of any length—plus a set of five size 6 double-pointed needles for working the crown. Stitch holders or extra size 6 (or smaller) double-pointed needles are needed to hold stitches during construction.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty
This pattern is designed for knitters with intermediate skill level and uses worsted weight yarn, a versatile and accessible yarn weight that works quickly and creates a warm, durable fabric ideal for children's winter wear. The combination of circular needle and double-pointed needle techniques, along with the seamless construction and shaping required for the elfin peak and ear flaps, makes this an engaging project for knitters ready to move beyond beginner patterns.
