Product Description
The idea of this witch was triggered by Bernat black and orange Fancy Fur yarn. It looked so “Halloweenish”, that we decided to buy a few skeins and knit something for Halloween. This is how the Witch was born. Every October she spends most of her time as a door decoration. For Halloween party we use her as a tea cozy. But sometimes when nobody can see, she escapes home and flies over New York city. See more pictures in knitvana.com
Witch Tea Cozy and Door Decoration by knitvana
Project Overview
The Witch Tea Cozy and Door Decoration is a versatile knitted Halloween craft designed by knitvana that serves dual purposes as both a festive tea cozy and decorative door hanging. Inspired by the distinctive appearance of Bernat black and orange Fancy Fur yarn, this intermediate-level knitting project captures the playful spirit of the Halloween season. The design is perfect for those seeking a seasonal decoration that combines functionality with festive charm, making it an ideal addition to October celebrations and Halloween gatherings.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a complete witch figure featuring a textured body, skirt, pointed hat, face with distinct features, and a broom accessory. The finished piece functions as a practical tea cozy that fits over a standard teapot while also serving as an eye-catching door decoration. The witch design includes dimensional elements such as a sculpted face, neck, and hands, along with textured hair and a structured pointed hat, creating a three-dimensional character piece rather than a flat decoration.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level project employs fundamental knitting techniques combined with strategic material choices to achieve its distinctive appearance. The construction involves working multiple components separately before assembly, allowing crafters to use different yarn weights and needle sizes appropriate to each section. The body and skirt utilize bulkier materials to create volume and structure, while finer yarns and smaller needles are employed for detailed facial features and extremities. Stuffing techniques with polyester fiberfill are incorporated to add dimension and help the piece maintain its shape, particularly in the pointed hat where structural support is essential.
Stitches and Yarn Details
The pattern utilizes Bernat Fancy Fur yarn in black and orange as the primary material for the body and skirt, worked on size #12 needles using two threads held together for appropriate fabric weight. The face, neck, and hands are created with light green cotton yarn (such as Aunt Lydia's brand) worked on size #4 needles using single thread for finer detail work. The hat is constructed from black yarn of any type, while the broom is made from bulky yarn worked on a bamboo needle. Hair texture comes from black and grey Fun Fur yarn, creating a distinctive fuzzy appearance. Polyester fiberfill stuffing provides internal structure, and a bamboo needle helps maintain the pointed hat's shape.
