Product Description
Wintering cap is inspired by the folk textiles of the Russian North, especially by the Komi knitting tradition.
The pattern seems to be complex, but it is delightfully easy to knit. The cap is unisex with a deep, “hugging” fit. The cap is constructed without a customary ribbing. It has an inner fold for warmth and styling.
Total yarn needed: 50-80g of different colors in fingering (light weight) yarn. This is a great occasion to use your yarn leftovers, because the instructions include how to use mystery yarn (i.e. yarn with lost label) for this project.
Instructional booklet includes:• charts for SM, MD, LG sizes, • 2 crown styles, • 2-,3-,4- color schemes, • 2-color method of Judy’s Magic Cast On with illustrations • suggestions for yarn choices, • tutorial on colors.
Wintering Cap by Fiberlure
What is Being Made
The Wintering Cap is a unisex knitted hat designed by Elmira Cancelada and inspired by the folk textiles of the Russian North, particularly the Komi knitting tradition. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a deep, close-fitting cap with a practical design suitable for cold weather wear. The pattern includes instructions for three sizes (SM, MD, LG) and offers two different crown style options, allowing knitters to customize their finished hat. With a total yarn requirement of only 50-80 grams, this project is an excellent way to use up yarn stash remnants while creating a one-of-a-kind wearable gift.
Techniques and Construction
Despite its visually complex appearance inspired by traditional folk textile patterns, the Wintering Cap is described as delightfully easy to knit, making it accessible to advanced knitters. The pattern incorporates charted colorwork elements characteristic of Komi knitting traditions. The design features a hugging fit that provides excellent coverage and warmth. The pattern includes comprehensive yarn substitution guidelines, enabling knitters to work with various colors from their existing yarn collections while maintaining the integrity of the traditional-inspired design.
Stitches and Pattern Elements
The Wintering Cap utilizes charted knitting patterns that showcase the intricate colorwork typical of Komi textile traditions. The charts are specifically formatted for the three included sizes, with variations for the two crown styles. The pattern structure allows knitters to follow the traditional folk-inspired motifs while working in the round to create the fitted cap shape.
Materials
This project calls for 50-80 grams of fingering weight (4-ply) yarn in multiple colors. The pattern is designed to accommodate yarn substitution, making it flexible for different yarn brands and fiber content. Knitters will need appropriate needles for fingering weight yarn, sized according to their preferred gauge and the specific yarn selected for the project.
