Winter Bootees by Brenda Green

What is Being Made

Winter Bootees are soft, cozy knitted booties designed for newborns and infants in three size options: Newborn, 3 months, and 6 months. These bootees feature a snug fit with foot measurements ranging from 8cm (3 inches) for newborns to 11.5cm (4.5 inches) for the 6-month size. The design includes a shaped instep for a secure fit on developing feet, making them ideal for keeping tiny toes warm during cold months.

Techniques Used

This beginner-friendly knitting project employs several fundamental techniques suitable for new knitters. The pattern uses stockinette stitch (stst) as the primary fabric base, which creates a smooth, classic knitted surface. The bootees incorporate moss stitch for textural detail and structure, particularly in the instep shaping area. Shaping is achieved through strategic increases and decreases, including knit two stitches together through the back loop (k2 sts tog tbl) for seamless decreasing. The pattern also includes slip stitches (sl 1 kw and sl 1 pw) to create neat edges and transitions between sections.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (k): The foundational stitch forming the main fabric
  • Purl stitch (p): Used in stockinette stitch and moss stitch sections
  • Increases (inc): Applied strategically to shape the foot opening and create proper fit
  • Knit two together through back loop (k2 sts tog tbl): Creates decreases for instep shaping
  • Purl two together (p2 tog): Used during instep shaping rows
  • Moss stitch: An alternating knit and purl pattern creating textured detail
  • Slip stitches (sl 1 kw, sl 1 pw): Provides neat edges and helps transition between pattern sections

Materials Required

The Winter Bootees are designed to be worked in 8ply/DK weight yarn, specifically Touch Yarns Merino in Shade #822. Yarn quantities vary by size: the Newborn size requires approximately 100m (1 x 50g/1oz ball), the 3-month size needs 1 x 50g/2oz, and the 6-month size also requires 1 x 50g/2oz. The pattern calls for two pairs of knitting needles—3.25mm/US 3 needles and 3.75mm/US 5 needles—allowing for proper gauge and construction. A wool needle is needed for sewing seams and finishing. The pattern notes that using yarn other than the specified Touch Yarns Merino may produce unsatisfactory results, emphasizing the importance of yarn selection for proper fit and appearance.

Difficulty Level

This project is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to the craft or those seeking a quick, rewarding project. The straightforward stitch combinations, manageable stitch counts, and clear shaping instructions provide an accessible introduction to constructing fitted garments while building confidence with fundamental knitting techniques.
