What is Being Made

Wings is an original shawlette design that functions as a versatile wrap or scarf. This knitted accessory features a distinctive construction method where two halves are worked separately from the outer tips toward the center, then seamlessly joined on a single needle. The shawlette offers flexibility in how it is worn and constructed, making it an elegant layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Construction and Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs a unique two-part construction technique. Rather than working from a traditional center-out or top-down approach, the Wings shawlette is built by working each half independently from the outer edges inward. Crafters have the option to work the two halves sequentially, one after the other, or simultaneously on a longer circular needle by utilizing both the inside and outside of the yarn ball. This dual-option approach accommodates different knitting preferences and needle availability.

The joining of the two halves on a single needle creates a seamless integration point at the center of the finished piece, resulting in a cohesive, professionally finished garment.

Yarn and Materials

The Wings shawlette is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, providing flexibility for different fiber preferences and finished dimensions.

For Fingering Weight Version: The pattern calls for 1 skein of fingering weight yarn, specifically shown in Dubai Knits Squishy (85% Merino, 15% Nylon, 329 meters per 100 grams) in the colorway Wild Orchid. This blend of Merino wool and Nylon provides softness with added durability and elasticity.

For DK Weight Version: Alternatively, crafters can use 2 skeins of DK weight yarn, demonstrated with WalkCollection BFL DK (100% British Breed Longwool, 225 meters per 100 grams) in the colorway Vulcanic Sand. The DK weight option requires additional yardage due to the thicker yarn, necessitating two skeins instead of one.

Needles: A 4mm circular needle is suggested for the main knitting, with a 4.5mm needle recommended for the bind-off. The use of a longer circular needle is particularly beneficial when working both halves simultaneously, as it accommodates the full width of the project.
