Product Description
This cozy cowl is just full of cable twists. I have used a combination of both right and left-leaning cable crosses to create an engaging pattern with intriguing texture. When selecting your yarn, I find this cowl to work best with roving type yarn to really show off the depth of the cable stitches.
Included with this pattern are instructions in both written and chart form, depending of your preference.

Windflower Cowl by Lizzy Knits
Project Overview
The Windflower Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern designed to create a cozy, textured neck accessory. This downloadable PDF pattern features a sophisticated cable design that combines both right and left-leaning cable crosses to produce an engaging, three-dimensional texture. The finished cowl measures 15 inches (34cm) tall with a 28-inch (71cm) circumference, making it an ideal accessory for layering during cooler seasons.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern showcases cable knitting as its primary technique. The design employs a combination of right-leaning and left-leaning cable crosses to create visual interest and depth throughout the piece. The base construction uses stockinette stitch, which provides a smooth canvas that allows the cable stitches to stand out prominently. The pattern instructions are provided in both written and chart form, accommodating different knitter preferences and skill levels.
Cable stitches require the use of a cable needle to temporarily hold stitches while crossing them over or under working stitches, creating the characteristic twisted rope-like appearance. The interplay between right and left-leaning cables produces a balanced, symmetrical design that draws the eye around the cowl.
Materials and Yarn Selection
The Windflower Cowl requires approximately 300 yards (196g/274m) of bulky weight yarn. The pattern designer recommends selecting a roving-type yarn to maximize the visual impact of the cable stitches and showcase their depth and texture. The designer used The Petite Wool from We Are Knitters for the original pattern sample.
Recommended yarn options include:
- We Are Knitters (WAK) Meriwool
- Patons Alpaca Blend
