Product Description
I designed this poncho as a sort of “shoulder hug” to keep my shoulders and upper arms warm but leave my hands and arms free. I also wanted dramatic cables and a pretty edging. Two identical rectangles are knit flat, then the poncho is assembled with two short seams.
Willow is pretty easy to knit if you have done cabling before. If you haven’t done cables, this is a good one to learn them on.
Instructions are included for modifying the width and length. Extra yarn may be needed if so.
Probably the most daunting part is constructing the poncho, but I created a conceptual model that you can actually cut out and tape together to see where to make the two short seams. It’s sort of like paper dolls! Not everyone will want to use the model, but it is available for anyone who does.
Pattern includes a schematic, a cable chart, and the above-referenced conceptual model. Also included is a link to a video tutorial for seaming method used.

Yarn and Materials
The Willow Poncho requires 550 yards [500 meters] of bulky weight yarn. The pattern is shown in Baa Ram Ewe Dovestone Natural Chunky, a bulky-weight yarn composed of 50% Bluefaced Leicester, 25% Wensleydale Longwool, and 25% Masham wool, which yields 131 yards per 100 grams. This yarn blend provides warmth and drape suitable for a cozy shoulder garment.
Knitting needles required are US size 7 (4.5 mm). After soaking and blocking, the gauge is 20 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches [10 cm] in stockinette stitch, which is important for achieving proper fit and drape in the finished poncho.
