Product Description

Willow newsboy is a hat I have been making for awhile but have just gotten round to writing it down after a friend had requested one. Available in small children's sizes right up to large adult.

Worked using double strands of chunky weight yarn (size 5) this hat will work up in super fast time.

The pattern uses only basic stitches and has a photo tutorial for the crab stitch.

A suitable project for a confident beginner or for someone looking to make a modern trendy hat in a short space of time.

The pattern is available in both US and UK terms. It has also been tested by my wonderful group of pattern testers who I am very grateful for.

You can also visit my website here for more.

Thank you and happy hooking.

Willow Newsboy Crochet Hat by Flo's Crafty Crochet

What Is Being Made

The Willow Newsboy is an adult crochet hat designed by Fiona Campbell of Flo's Crafty Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat sized to fit a 22-inch head circumference, making it suitable for average adult head sizes. The newsboy style is a classic hat design characterized by its structured crown and small stiff brim, offering both warmth and vintage-inspired style.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This beginner-friendly crochet pattern uses fundamental techniques accessible to newer crafters. The construction begins with a magic ring, a popular method for starting projects in the round that creates a seamless center point. The pattern incorporates several essential crochet stitches and techniques including increases and decreases to shape the crown, and back loop only (BLO) stitching to create specific texture or structural elements. The hat is worked primarily in the round, which is a standard approach for hat construction that allows for even shaping and a professional finish.

Stitches Used

The Willow Newsboy pattern utilizes core crochet stitches suitable for beginners:

  • Single Crochet (SC) – the most basic and tight stitch, often used for structure and shaping
  • Double Crochet (DC) – a taller stitch that creates drape and works quickly
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) – a medium-height stitch that bridges single and double crochet
  • Reverse Single Crochet (RSC) – worked backwards to create a decorative finished edge
  • Slip Stitch (SL ST) – used to join rounds and move yarn across stitches without adding height
  • Chain (CH) – the foundation stitch used to create loops and height
  • Increases (INC) – working multiple stitches into one stitch to expand the fabric
  • Decreases (DEC) – combining stitches to reduce stitch count and shape the crown

Materials and Tools

The Willow Newsboy requires minimal materials, making it an economical project. The pattern calls for 180 meters of chunky weight yarn held double stranded, which means working with two 90-meter strands simultaneously. This doubling technique creates a thicker, faster-working fabric that produces a cozy, substantial hat. Two crochet hooks are needed: an 8mm hook (the primary working size) and a 6mm hook (likely used for specific sections or finishing details). Additional supplies include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and scissors for cutting yarn. An optional button may be added as a decorative embellishment. The chunky yarn weight combined with the larger hook size makes this project quick to complete, ideal for beginners who want to see fast results.

Pattern Details

This is a downloadable PDF pattern created for personal use. The pattern includes a complete abbreviations and terms section using US crochet terminology, ensuring clarity for English-speaking crocheters. The design is beginner-level, making it perfect for those new to crochet who want to learn fundamental techniques while creating a wearable, practical garment.
