Product Description
Wild ride is a sock pattern with an alternative construction. The entire sock is knit flat in a modular style with all the joining completed as you go.
The combination of the Chain stitch pattern and the beautiful self-striping yarn work together to create this fun sock, reminiscent of summers spent at the beach carnival enjoying all the wild rides.
This sock was designed with self striping yarns in mind, but works well with scraps also, as shown in socks knit by testers.
While the pattern includes notes on customising the length of the sock, please be aware that the stitch pattern and construction are not suitable for a knee length sock.

Wild Ride Socks by Tracey Lee
What Is Being Made
Wild Ride is a pair of knitted socks designed by independent designer Tracey Lee. This pattern creates fun, carnival-themed socks reminiscent of summer beach experiences. The design features a distinctive Chain stitch pattern combined with self-striping yarn to produce vertical color effects that evoke the playful energy of amusement park rides.
Pattern Construction and Technique
Wild Ride employs an alternative sock construction method that differs from traditional top-down or toe-up approaches. The entire sock is knit flat in a modular style, meaning pieces are worked as flat panels rather than in the round. All joining is completed as you progress through the pattern, creating a seamless final garment despite the flat-knit construction method. This approach allows for easier manipulation of the self-striping yarn and creates striking vertical color patterns.
The pattern utilizes a provisional cast on at the beginning, which allows stitches to be picked up later for joining. This technique is essential to the modular construction and enables the flat panels to be connected smoothly.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch pattern featured in Wild Ride is the Chain stitch, which creates texture and visual interest when worked in self-striping yarn. The pattern also incorporates stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as a foundational stitch. These stitches work together to showcase the vertical striping effect of the yarn, making the color changes a prominent design feature rather than a secondary element.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 150–400 meters (165–440 yards) of 4ply, fingering, or sock weight yarn. Self-striping yarn is recommended to achieve the full design effect, though multiple solid colors can also be used for an alternative look.
- Needles: 2.5mm (US 1.5) straight needles, 25cm (10 inches) or longer, for flat knitting. Additionally, a 2.5mm (US 1.5) circular needle, 80cm (32 inches), is needed for holding instep and heel stitches during construction.
- Notions: Waste yarn for the provisional cast on at the beginning and for holding heel stitches. A stitch holder or additional waste yarn is required for holding instep stitches during the modular construction process.
Difficulty Level and Gauge
Wild Ride is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable with alternative construction methods and stitch pattern work.
The pattern provides two gauge measurements for reference:
- 32 stitches and 40 rows = 10cm (4 inches) in stocking stitch, knit flat
- 38 stitches and 62 rows = 10cm (4 inches) in Chain stitch, knit flat
Achieving the correct gauge is important for proper sock fit, particularly given the flat-knit construction and the need to join panels accurately.
