White Clovers Knit Sweater

Garment Overview

White Clovers is a seamless yoked sweater designed by Becky Herrick and published by Sugar Tree Designs. This advanced-level knitting project features a sophisticated color work design that combines stranded colorwork diamonds with a distinctive clover pattern positioned at the yoke. The sweater is constructed in one piece from the bottom up, creating a polished, professional finish without seams.

Available Sizes and Measurements

White Clovers is available in five sizes with chest circumferences of 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches (91.5, 101.5, 112, 122, and 132 centimeters). Detailed schematic measurements are provided in the pattern to ensure proper fit across all size ranges.

Yarn Specifications

This pattern uses Knit Picks City Tweed HW, an aran-weight yarn composed of 55% Merino wool, 25% alpaca, and 20% Donegal Tweed. This blend provides warmth, softness, and visual texture. The yarn is worked at 165 yards per 100 grams. Three colors are used throughout the design:

  • MC (Main Color): Tahitian Pearl, requiring 6, 7, 8, 9, or 9 skeins depending on size
  • CC1 (Contrast Color 1): Snowshoe, requiring 1, 1, 2, 2, or 2 skeins depending on size
  • CC2 (Contrast Color 2): Toad, requiring 1 skein for all sizes

Gauge and Needle Requirements

The pattern is worked at a gauge of 16 stitches and 21 rows per 4-inch (10-centimeter) square in stockinette stitch. US 9/5.5 mm needles are recommended, though knitters should size up or down as needed to achieve the correct gauge. A 32-inch circular needle is used for the body, and double-pointed needles are used for the sleeves.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Construction Method: White Clovers employs seamless, top-down yoke construction worked in one continuous piece. This technique eliminates the need for seaming and allows for easy adjustments during fitting.

Stitch Patterns: The sweater features garter ribbing at the hem and cuffs, providing elastic edge definition. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch, which serves as the foundation for the color work sections.

Color Work Technique: Stranded colorwork is the primary advanced technique used in this pattern. Above the ribbed hem, stranded color work diamonds are integrated into the design, and the signature clover pattern is worked in stranded colorwork at the yoke. This technique involves carrying multiple yarn colors across rows and picking them up as needed to create the pattern, requiring careful tension management and color coordination.

Notions and Additional Materials

Beyond yarn and needles, the pattern requires a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, a stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding sleeve stitches during yoke construction, and four stitch markers, including one unique marker to denote the end of round.

Skill Level

White Clovers is designated as an advanced knitting project. The combination of seamless yoke construction, stranded colorwork, and multi-color pattern management makes this sweater suitable for experienced knitters with solid foundational skills in color work techniques and garment construction.
