Whiritoa Slouch Beanie by Koru Designs Aotearoa

What Is Being Made

The Whiritoa Slouch Beanie is a downloadable knitting pattern for a relaxed-fit hat inspired by the coastal village of Whiritoa on the Coromandel Peninsula in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The name Whiritoa translates to "meeting place of great wisdom," and the design captures the serene beauty and tranquility of this special location with its stunning beach, caves, and powerful blowhole. This slouch beanie is available in five different sizes to accommodate various head circumferences: 50cm, 53cm, 55cm, 57cm, and 60cm.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are ready to work with more complex stitch techniques and shaping.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Whiritoa pattern incorporates several intermediate knitting techniques to create its distinctive slouch silhouette and textured design. The pattern uses circular needles for working in the round, which is a fundamental technique for hat construction. Knitters will employ decreasing techniques such as knit two together (K2tog) to shape the crown of the beanie. The pattern also features cable-inspired stitch work, including cross stitches that add visual interest and texture—specifically, cross 2 right (K) instructions that require knitting into the front of the second stitch while passing in front of the first stitch before knitting into the first stitch. Additionally, the pattern uses knit through the back loop (K1tbl) to create twisted stitches that add definition to certain sections of the hat.

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Stocking stitch: The primary stitch used throughout the hat, creating a smooth, classic fabric
  • K2tog (knit two together): A right-leaning decrease used for crown shaping
  • K1tbl (knit through the back loop): Creates twisted stitches for textured detail
  • Cross 2 right (K): A cable-style crossing stitch that adds decorative texture and visual interest to the design

Materials and Equipment

Yarn: The pattern requires 8ply or DK weight yarn, with 100 grams or less needed to complete the hat in any of the five available sizes. This yarn weight is ideal for creating a fabric with good drape and structure suitable for a slouch beanie.

Needles and Tools: Knitters will need 3.75mm and 5mm circular needles, both 40cm in length, for working the main body and ribbed sections. The pattern accommodates different circular needle preferences—knitters may use traditional circular needles, double-pointed needles (DPNs), or the Magic Loop method for working small circumferences in the round. Additional equipment includes two stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and the start of round, a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends, and a balloon for blocking the finished hat to achieve the desired slouch shape and even texture.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 19 stitches and 10 centimeters in stocking stitch when worked on 5mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for ensuring the hat fits properly across all five size options.

Pattern Abbreviations

  • S.O.R: Start of round
  • K2tog: Knit two together (decrease)
  • K1tbl: Knit through the back loop
  • Cross 2 right (K): Cross stitch to the right
