Product Description

The body and the sleeves of this casual comfy yoked sweater are worked in the round from the top down. Starting at the in-built neck band, which includes a few short rows to slightly raise the back of the neck, stalks of wheat radiate down on a reverse stocking stitch yoke. A stocking stitch body is then worked with decorative but functional wheat motif set-in lined pockets, with the stems flowing directly into the bottom ribbing. There are three different width pocket designs to keep the same look/proportions across all sizes.

Meant to be worn with 2-4” positive ease. Choose 1-2 sizes larger than your actual chest size, depending upon the amount of ease you want.

The sample was knit in Miss Babs Yowza DK/8-ply 100% Merino, 512 m/226 grammes.

Wheat Fields Sweater by Helen Gipson

What Is Being Made

The Wheat Fields Sweater is a knitted pullover sweater designed by Helen Gipson. This intermediate-level project features a yoke construction with pocket linings, offering a sophisticated silhouette suitable for everyday wear. The pattern includes multiple size options to accommodate various body measurements.

Knitting Techniques Used

This sweater employs several key knitting techniques that define its construction and visual appeal. The yoke shaping utilizes strategic decreases to create a fitted shoulder and upper body area. Cable knit details are incorporated into the design, requiring the use of a cable needle to create textured, dimensional elements. The pattern uses stocking stitch as the primary fabric, which creates a smooth, classic knit surface. Pocket linings are worked as integrated elements within the sweater body, adding both functional and design interest. The neckband is worked in the round using circular needles, ensuring a neat, professional finish at the neck opening.

Stitches and Construction Details

The sweater is primarily worked in stocking stitch, which forms the foundation of the fabric. Cable stitches are strategically placed throughout the design to add texture and visual interest. The pattern requires working in the round for both the yoke and body sections, which is accomplished using circular needles of appropriate lengths. The neckband is worked separately using smaller needles to create a snug, finished edge. Scrap yarn is used for provisional cast-on techniques, allowing for seamless construction and the ability to pick up stitches cleanly for pocket linings and other details.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Wheat Fields Sweater is designed for DK weight yarn, requiring between 1050 and 1825 yards (964 to 1674 metres) depending on the selected size. The pattern accommodates multiple size ranges with specific yardage requirements for each. The sample garment was knitted using Miss Babs Yowza, a 100% merino yarn, in the colourway Hayrick, requiring 2 to 4 skeins depending on size.

Needles required include US 5/3.75 mm circular needles measuring 16 inches (40 cm) for working the neckband, and US 6/4 mm circular needles in multiple cable lengths—16 inches (40 cm), 24 inches (60 cm), or 40 inches (100 cm)—for the yoke and body sections. A cable needle is essential for working the cable stitch details. Additional materials include scrap yarn in both matching and lighter weights for provisional techniques, and a darning needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern is worked to a gauge of 21.5 stitches and 28 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stocking stitch. Achieving the correct gauge is critical for proper fit and sizing. The pattern offers multiple size options with corresponding yardage adjustments, and notes that pocket linings can be worked in alternative yarn to potentially reduce yardage requirements for certain sizes, with pocket linings requiring approximately 90 to 130 yards (82 to 118 metres) depending on size.
