What to Wear with My Yellow Bag Shawl Pattern

Project Overview

This downloadable knitting pattern by Meiju Kallio presents an asymmetric triangular shawl designed with versatility and ease of construction in mind. The shawl is ideal for knitters seeking an intermediate-level project that works beautifully with variegated yarn as well as solid or semi-solid skeins from your stash. The pattern's flexible design allows you to customize the final size by continuing the pattern as long as desired.

Construction Method and Shaping

The shawl is knitted from side to side, growing progressively through strategic increases and decreases. The shaping technique involves binding off 8 stitches for every 16 stitches increased, creating a distinctive wavy border along the bind-off edge. This asymmetric construction means increases are worked primarily on one side of the shawl, while the decreases shape and define the characteristic wavy edge detail.

Stitch Pattern and Techniques

An interesting slip stitch pattern forms the foundation of this design, adding textural interest and visual depth to the finished piece. The slip stitch technique is particularly effective at showcasing variegated colorways, as it creates subtle color blending and pattern variation throughout the shawl. The primary stitch used is garter stitch, which provides a stable, reversible fabric with excellent drape suitable for shawl construction.

Finished Dimensions

  • Top edge width: 63 inches (160 centimeters)
  • Depth from deepest point: 12 inches (30 centimeters)

Gauge and Sizing Information

The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in garter stitch. While exact gauge is not critical for this design, variations in your personal gauge will affect both the yardage required and the final shawl dimensions. By adjusting yarn weight and needle size, you can easily modify the overall size of the finished shawl to suit your preferences.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern was designed using Madelinetosh Tosh Sock, a 4-ply weight yarn composed of 100% Merino Wool. Each skein provides 420 yards (384 meters) per 100 grams. The 4-ply weight classification makes this yarn suitable for creating fabric with excellent stitch definition while maintaining the drape essential for shawl patterns. The Merino Wool fiber content offers softness, breathability, and natural elasticity, making the finished shawl comfortable for extended wear.

Yarn and Needle Recommendations

The pattern works effectively with both variegated and solid-colored yarns in the 4-ply weight category. Your needle selection should be chosen to achieve the specified gauge of 20 stitches per 4 inches. The flexibility of this pattern means you can experiment with different yarn and needle combinations to create variations in size and drape while maintaining the essential asymmetric triangular silhouette and wavy edge characteristic.

Difficulty Level

Classified as an intermediate-level pattern, this shawl requires familiarity with basic knitting techniques including increases, decreases, and slip stitch work. The side-to-side construction and straightforward shaping make it accessible to knitters with some experience while offering enough textural interest and design elements to engage more advanced crafters.
