Product Description

The Westfjords of Iceland are a rugged and stunning region of the country. Less traveled and icy, the perfect journey for you and your new Westfjords jumper!

This is a pattern for a jumper worked from the top down and in the round, with a circular yoke, and using the stranded colourwork technique. Yoke, body, and sleeve motifs are charted. Familiarity with charts, using multiple repeats withing a chart, and extending patterning is helpful with this project.

Stitches are cast on, the rib is worked followed by the yoke. Then sleeve sts are separated from the body and each element is worked separately. All is worked in st st unless otherwise noted.

This garment is intended to be worn with a bit of positive ease since Lettlopi is usually not worn against bare skin. Adjustments may be made for best fit. Please see schematic for all approximate finished sizes. Familiarity with charts and extending patterning is helpful with this project.

Westfjords Stranded Colorwork Sweater by bunnymuff

What is Being Made

The Westfjords is a top-down, seamless knit sweater featuring traditional stranded colorwork throughout. This intermediate-level design combines a charted yoke with coordinating body and sleeve motifs, creating a cohesive Fair Isle-inspired garment worked entirely in the round.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs several key knitting techniques suitable for intermediate knitters:

  • Stranded colorwork: The primary technique, where two colors are carried across the back of the work to create patterned sections. Knitters working stranded colorwork may find their gauge differs from single-color knitting, so gauge adjustment via needle size changes is recommended.
  • Top-down construction: The sweater is worked from the neckline downward, beginning with the yoke and progressing through the body and sleeves.
  • Circular knitting: The entire garment is worked in the round, eliminating seams and creating a seamless finish.
  • Charted motifs: The yoke, body, and sleeves feature multiple repeats of charted stitch patterns that guide the colorwork placement.

Stitches Used

Stockinette stitch forms the foundation of this sweater. The pattern specifies two different gauges: 18 stitches by 22 rows over 4 inches on 4.5mm needles for stranded colorwork sections, and 18 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches on 3.75mm needles for single-color sections. This gauge distinction accommodates the natural tension variations that occur when carrying multiple yarn colors.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Westfjords calls for Léttlopi by Ístex, a 100% Icelandic wool yarn in the aran weight category. Each 50-gram ball yields approximately 109 yards (100 meters).

Yarn quantities by size:

  • Main Color (glacier blue heather): 7–15 balls depending on size
  • Contrast Color 1 (chocolate heather): 2–4 balls depending on size
  • Contrast Color 2 (straw): 1–2 balls depending on size

Needles and Tools

The pattern requires circular needles in two sizes to maintain consistent gauge across different stitch types:

  • 3.75mm (US No. 5) circular needle, 40 inches / 101 centimeters
  • 4.5mm (US No. 7) circular needle, 40 inches / 101 centimeters
  • Double-pointed needles (DPNs) for finishing details

Finished Sizes

The Westfjords is available in seven finished sizes, accommodating a range of body measurements from petite to generous proportions.
