Product Description

This jacket is worked in separate pieces from the lower edge to the shoulders and sewn together. The fronts are worked in stranded colourwork, with the strands carried across the RS of the work. Fully fashioned shoulder shaping is worked on the back only, so the shoudler seams wrap over the shoulder. The jacket has set-in sleeves. The waist is shaped with increases and decreases for the back and by using different sized needles for the front, stranded pieces.

Intended to be worn with approximately 5 cm (2") positive ease.

Weft Cardigan by Holli Yeoh

What Is Being Made

Weft is an advanced knitted cardigan designed by Holli Yeoh, available as a downloadable PDF pattern. This garment is a fully fashioned cardigan with sophisticated shaping and colorwork details, offered in nine size options ranging from 32½ inches to 64½ inches bust measurement (82.5 cm to 164 cm). The cardigan is intended to fit with 2 inches of positive ease and features a finished length between 23 and 26 inches depending on size.

Knitting Techniques

Weft employs several advanced knitting techniques that elevate it beyond beginner projects. The back shoulder shaping uses fully fashioned decreases, incorporating both double and triple cabled decreases for a refined, decorative finish. This technique creates visible decrease lines that are intentionally designed as design elements rather than hidden shaping methods.

The front shoulders are worked straight, allowing the shoulder seams to fall toward the back of the garment for improved fit and silhouette. Waist shaping on the fronts is achieved through changing needle sizes rather than traditional decreases, creating subtle waist definition without disrupting stitch patterns.

The cardigan features stranded colorwork across the front. When working stranded knitting, the pattern requires maintaining consistency in yarn dominance: one color should always be held above the other yarn when stranding across the front. In the sample shown, CC1 (contrast color 1) is worked as the non-dominant color throughout, always stranded below the other color in each row. This consistency prevents the stranded work from appearing uneven or sloppy in the finished fabric.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

While the PDF content references cabled decreases and stranded colorwork as primary stitch techniques, the complete stitch pattern details would be found in the full pattern instructions. The use of cabled decreases indicates the pattern incorporates cable stitch techniques for both functional shaping and decorative effect.

Materials

The suggested yarn for Weft is Briggs & Little Regal, a worsted weight yarn with yardage of 272 yards per 248 meters per skein. The worsted weight classification makes this yarn ideal for creating a fabric with good drape and stitch definition, allowing the fully fashioned decreases and stranded colorwork to display clearly in the finished cardigan. The pattern requires appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn, with needle size adjustments used strategically for waist shaping as noted in the design.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced and is best suited for experienced knitters. The combination of fully fashioned decreases, stranded colorwork requiring consistent tension and color management, and the precision needed for proper fit across nine size options makes Weft a challenging project. Knitters should have solid experience with decreases, colorwork techniques, and garment construction before attempting this design.
