Product Description

A little Gansey (Guernsey) sweater in traditional knit and purl patterns with some simple twisted stitches. It has underarm gussets and a buttoned neckband for easy fitting. As most traditional ganseys were made, it is knit in the round from the hem to the armholes, then flat on two needles for the top, with sleeves worked in the round down to the cuff. This makes the whole garment seamless. The pattern is written in full with additional charts for the stitch patterns, and includes instructions for 3-needle cast off.

It uses a fairly thick DK yarn with approx 100m/110yds per 50 gms: eg Carnival Soft 8ply, or Cascade 220 Superwash or Debbie Bliss Rialto DK. Yarns with a good twist give best stitch definition.

Four sizes to fit approx 1-2 yrs, 3-4 yrs, 5-6 yrs and 7-8 yrs. Size 1 takes approx 400m/440yds; size 2: 480m/520yds; size 3: 600m/660yds; size 4: 700m/770yds

Intermediate level knitters.

Wee Gansey by Rian Anderson

What is Being Made

The Wee Gansey is a seamless traditional Gansey (also known as a Guernsey) sweater designed for children ages 1 to 8 years. This pattern offers four sizes to accommodate growing children, with chest measurements ranging from 55cm (22 inches) for size 1 to 70cm (28 inches) for size 4. The garment is constructed as a pullover with a buttoned neckband feature that provides an easy fit for dressing and undressing young children.

Design Features and Construction

The Wee Gansey is engineered as a seamless construction, meaning the body and sleeves are knitted in the round without seams, creating a smooth, comfortable garment ideal for children's wear. A distinctive feature of this traditional Gansey design is the inclusion of underarm gussets, which are triangular fabric insertions at the underarms that provide extra ease of movement and durability in an area subject to frequent stress and stretching. The buttoned neckband allows for adjustable closure and easier dressing, making this design particularly practical for young wearers.

Techniques Used

  • Seamless knitting in the round using circular needles
  • Stitch pattern charting and written instructions
  • Gusset shaping and integration
  • Neckband construction with button closure
  • Sleeve cap shaping for proper fit

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern incorporates traditional Gansey stitch patterns, which are characteristic of this classic sweater style. The pattern is provided in both written format and chart form, allowing knitters to follow either written abbreviations or visual stitch diagrams. The specific stitch patterns are detailed within the full pattern instructions, combining textured stitches typical of traditional Gansey design.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed for DK weight yarn (also referred to as 8 ply), with a recommended yardage of approximately 95 to 105 meters per 50 grams. Yarn requirements vary by size:

  • Size 1: 210 grams (approximately 400–440 meters/yards)
  • Size 2: 250 grams (approximately 480–520 meters/yards)
  • Size 3: 320 grams (approximately 600–660 meters/yards)
  • Size 4: 360 grams (approximately 700–770 meters/yards)

The pattern notes that using thinner DK yarn may alter both measurements and yardage requirements. Knitters will need 4mm (US 6) circular needles, with the option of using either one or two circular needles depending on preferred knitting method.

Skill Level

The Wee Gansey is rated as an intermediate level knitting project. This difficulty level assumes knitters have foundational skills in cast-on, basic stitches, and knitting in the round, and are ready to work with stitch charts and manage shaping techniques such as gusset integration and neckband construction.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern created by independent designer Rian Anderson, published in 2019. The pattern includes full written instructions alongside stitch charts, making it accessible to knitters who prefer either format or use both in combination.
