Product Description
(1) crochet pattern for We the People Pillow. Made with really soft “I Love This Yarn” brand yarn, this pillow showcases a tasteful play on the American flag, with an abstract take on the stars. I used a muted gray to take place of the white.
This inspiring pillow was made using the “intarsia” method, which is just a fancy word for ‘rows of single crochet and color changes’. Intarsia crochet is not super difficult and works up fairly quickly. There are quite a few good videos on youtube for intarsia crochet available, should you want to view them.
Pattern includes instruction and tips for how to do intarsia crochet, specific instructions for THIS particular pattern and a colored graph. “I Love This Yarn” brand yarn was used for this pattern, however any medium weight (#4) worsted weight yarn with comparable colors can be used. Front of the pillow has the artful graphic, the back is plain gray.
We The People Pillow - Intarsia Crochet Pattern
Project Overview
The We The People Pillow is a patriotic home décor project created using the intarsia crochet technique. This downloadable PDF pattern from designer Needle Me That offers detailed instructions for crafting a decorative pillow featuring multi-colored crochet work with a patriotic design theme.
Craft Technique: Intarsia Crochet
Intarsia crochet is a specialized crochet method designed to create multi-colored projects with a neat, finished appearance. Unlike some crochet colorwork techniques, intarsia crochet produces clean results on both the right and wrong sides of the work, or alternatively, a polished right side with controlled strands (known as "floats") on the reverse side. This technique differs from tapestry crochet in that it does not involve carrying yarn colors along as you work, allowing for more flexibility in color placement and cleaner color transitions throughout the design.
Pattern Structure and Components
This comprehensive pattern is organized into three essential sections to guide crocheters through the project:
- Intarsia Crochet Foundation (Pages 2–4): Detailed definition, step-by-step instruction, and professional tips for executing intarsia crochet techniques. This section is ideal for crocheters new to the method, though experienced intarsia crafters may skip ahead.
- Pillow Construction Instructions (Pages 5–9): Specific, project-focused guidance for completing the We The People Pillow, including assembly and finishing techniques.
- Colored Graph and Chart (Separate PDF file): A detailed colored graph displaying the design pattern, complete with color chart and stitch direction indicators to ensure accurate color placement and proper stitch orientation throughout the project.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
This pattern is suitable for intermediate-level crocheters and works with aran and worsted weight yarns. The intermediate difficulty reflects the technical skill required for executing intarsia crochet colorwork accurately while maintaining consistent tension and neat finishing throughout the pillow.
Materials Required
Crocheters will need aran or worsted weight yarn in multiple colors to match the patriotic design chart, along with an appropriately sized crochet hook suited to the chosen yarn weight. The pattern includes a detailed color chart to guide yarn color selection for the intarsia design.
