Product Description

A rippling stitch makes tracks in a warm, fuzzy yarn. These cuffs add a bit more warmth above your boots and stop any cold drafts from reaching your toes. Before you cast on, there is something you need to know: Ladies, this stitch does not make “sense”… it seems to break all rules of logic and proper order. Count, follow the instructions slavishly, and the pattern will appear just like magic once a couple inches are knit! I wrote the chart and I still have to watch it carefully when I knit! Don’t assume everything is out of line till you have knit a bit. The sizes included will cover everyone from children to plus size adults. These cuffs were originally knit in Knit Picks Reverie yarn. Almost any yarn of a similar weight (heavy worsted) will work.

Wave Cuffs by Jenise Hope

Product Overview

Wave Cuffs are knitted bootcuffs designed by Jenise Hope, offering a versatile accessory that combines functional leg warmth with decorative wave stitch patterning. These cuffs are sized to fit a wide range of calf measurements, making them suitable for babies, children, and adults of varying proportions.

What Is Being Made

Wave Cuffs are knitted leg accessories that slip over the calf and sit above the boot or shoe. They function as decorative and warming cuffs that can be worn independently or layered over other footwear. The design includes sizing options ranging from 7.5 inches to 21 inches around the calf, accommodating infants through adults with larger leg measurements.

Sizing and Fit

The pattern provides six size options to fit calves measuring 7.5, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21 inches in circumference. The sizing guide offers practical recommendations: 6–7 inches for babies and toddlers ages 2–5 years, 8–11 inches for children ages 6–12 years, 12–14 inches for slim adult legs, 15–17 inches for muscular adult legs, and 21 inches or larger for the largest sizes. The designer emphasizes measuring the actual leg being knitted for, as individual proportions vary significantly. The cuffs are designed with negative ease of approximately 2 inches for secure fit, though positive ease is possible when elastic is threaded through the ribbing or when wearing the cuffs over jeans and tight boots.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

Wave Cuffs are constructed using knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern incorporates ribbing at the top, which provides elasticity and helps the cuffs stay securely in place on the leg. The primary design feature is wave stitch patterning, which creates the distinctive undulating texture that gives these cuffs their visual appeal and name. The combination of ribbed and patterned sections demonstrates fundamental shaping and stitch variation techniques suitable for knitters with some experience.

Materials

Wave Cuffs are knitted using Knit Picks Reverie 8, an aran-weight yarn. Aran weight yarn (approximately 8 ply) provides adequate stitch definition for the wave pattern while allowing for relatively quick project completion. The yarn choice supports the intermediate difficulty level, as aran-weight yarn is forgiving enough for pattern work while still creating well-defined stitch texture. Knitters will need appropriately sized needles for aran-weight yarn, typically in the US 7–9 range, though specific needle size recommendations would be found in the complete pattern.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, Wave Cuffs suit knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are comfortable following stitch patterns with increases, decreases, and texture variations. The wave stitch pattern requires attention to pattern repeats and shaping, making this project ideal for knitters looking to build skills beyond fundamental stockinette and ribbing.
