What Is Being Made

The Watermelon Charm is a small knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry that functions as an adorable key chain or bag charm. This project creates a realistic-looking watermelon slice measuring approximately 8cm across. The charm is an excellent stash-busting project, requiring only small amounts of yarn in multiple colors, making it ideal for using up leftover yarn from other projects.

Knitting Techniques

This pattern is worked flat using the back-and-forth method on single pointed knitting needles, rather than being knitted in the round. The primary stitch used throughout the project is stockinette stitch (also known as stocking stitch), which creates the smooth, classic knitted fabric visible on the finished charm. Stockinette stitch is worked by knitting all stitches on right-side rows and purling all stitches on wrong-side rows to achieve the characteristic V-pattern texture.

Upon completion of the knitted pieces, the charm is assembled using the mattress stitch seaming technique. Mattress stitch is a professional finishing method that creates nearly invisible seams, making it particularly suitable for small projects like this charm where neat construction is important for visual appeal.

Yarn and Materials

This pattern uses DK weight yarn (also referred to as double knitting, light worsted weight, or 8 ply yarn). The project requires only small quantities—a few grams in each of three coordinating shades to create the watermelon design. The sample photographed was knitted using Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn, in the following shades: Fern Green 603 for the outer rind, Pink 992 for the flesh, and White 961 for the inner detail.

Knitting needles required are 3mm single pointed needles. The pattern specifies a tension of 24 stitches by 30 rows measured over 10cm by 10cm in stockinette stitch using these needles, though the designer notes that exact tension is not critical for successful completion of this small charm.
