Watercolor Ponies Poncho/Shirt by Melissa Schaschwary

What Is Being Made

The Watercolor Ponies is a customizable pullover shirt or poncho-style garment designed by Melissa Schaschwary. This knitted piece features a relaxed fit intended to be worn with a layering shirt underneath, with the standard length hitting at the belly button. The design offers exceptional length customization, allowing knitters to adjust the finished garment to their preferred proportions by simply adding additional yardage as needed.

Available Sizes and Finished Measurements

This pattern is available in six sizes ranging from extra small to 2X-large:

  • XS: 28–30 inches
  • S: 32–34 inches
  • M: 36–38 inches
  • L: 40–42 inches
  • XL: 44–46 inches
  • 2X: 48–50 inches

Yarn Requirements

Knitters can choose between two yarn weight options depending on their preferred finished fabric and drape. For DK weight yarn, the pattern requires approximately 630 yards for XS, scaling up to 860 yards for 2X. Alternatively, bulky weight yarn requires approximately 430 yards for XS, increasing to 530 yards for 2X. An optional contrasting color yarn of 200–300 yards (or 100–200 yards for bulky weight) can be incorporated for added visual interest and the watercolor pony design element.

Needles and Tools

The pattern calls for 36-inch circular needles as the primary working tool. For DK weight yarn, use US Size 8 (5mm) needles. For bulky weight yarn, use US Size 13 (9mm) needles. The pattern notes suggest having additional circular needle sizes on hand for comfort and ease: a 16-inch circular needle for casting on and a 48-inch circular needle for working the upper portions of the garment, particularly helpful depending on the size being made.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level knitting project uses circular needle techniques throughout, allowing for seamless construction. The garment is worked in the round, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a smooth, professional finish. The pattern is designed with flexibility in mind—knitters can customize the overall length by continuing to work additional rounds beyond the standard belly-button length, making it adaptable for different body types and style preferences.

Design Features

The Watercolor Ponies design incorporates colorwork elements, with the option to add a contrasting color yarn to create the distinctive watercolor pony motif. The poncho or shirt silhouette offers a relaxed, comfortable fit suitable for layering, making it a versatile addition to any wardrobe.
