Watching You 4 Ply Socks Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Watching You 4 Ply Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Cutterly Knitted for creating a pair of fitted socks. This intermediate-level project produces classic pull-on socks featuring a decorative lace pattern on the leg and cuff, combined with a traditional heel construction. The pattern is suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with double pointed needles and reading stitch abbreviations.
Knitting Techniques Used
This sock pattern employs several essential knitting techniques that make it an excellent intermediate project:
- Circular knitting: The socks are worked in the round using double pointed needles, which creates seamless fabric and allows for continuous knitting without turning the work
- Ribbed cuff construction: The pattern begins with a knit 2, purl 2 ribbing worked over 12 rounds to create an elastic cuff that holds the socks securely on the leg
- Lace pattern work: The main leg features a repeating 4-round lace motif that creates decorative eyelet details
- Heel flap and turn: The pattern includes instructions for constructing a traditional heel using a subset of stitches, with a slipped stitch heel flap that provides durability
- Stitch marker placement: Markers are used to track the beginning of rounds and pattern repeats, essential for maintaining accuracy in circular knitting
Stitches and Abbreviations
The Watching You 4 Ply Socks pattern incorporates fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for sock construction:
- Knit (K): The basic stitch used throughout the pattern
- Purl (P): Used in the ribbed cuff and as part of the lace pattern repeat
- Knit 2 Together (K2TOG): A left-leaning decrease used in the lace motif
- Yarn Over (YO): Creates the eyelet holes characteristic of the lace pattern
- Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over (SL1, K1, PSSO): A right-leaning decrease that balances the K2TOG decreases in the lace design
- Slip stitch (Slip 1): Used in the heel flap construction to create a reinforced edge
Materials and Gauge
The pattern requires specific materials to achieve the intended fit and finish:
- Yarn: 100g of 4ply yarn, which provides the appropriate weight for creating fitted socks with good stitch definition
- Needles: Five size 2.75mm double pointed needles, which are standard for 4ply sock knitting and allow for the required gauge
- Notions: Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and round beginnings, plus a needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Gauge: 9 stitches and 10 rows per inch, which is typical for 4ply yarn and ensures the finished socks will fit properly
Pattern Structure and Design Details
The Watching You pattern features a cast-on of 60 stitches worked without twisting to maintain a clean edge. The sock begins with 12 rounds of knit 2, purl 2 ribbing to create the cuff. The main leg features a repeating lace pattern that is worked over 4 rounds and repeated 11 times (or adjusted to desired sock length before the heel). This creates an attractive decorative element while maintaining the structural integrity of the sock. The pattern then transitions to heel construction, which uses a traditional two-needle method working only on a subset of stitches while the remaining stitches are held for later completion of the foot.
