Product Description
This pattern is inspired by the Warren Truss, from my days of undergraduate engineering statics class. Truss problems were my favorite to do, and the zig zag lacing of the Warren Truss is mirrored here in these boot cuffs. These make great last minute gifts, or selfish knits to keep! They’re also a good way to get rid of some odds and ends in your stash pile.

Warren Boot Cuffs by Sharon Hartley
Project Overview
The Warren Boot Cuffs are a pair of knitted leg warmers inspired by the geometric principles of the Warren Truss, a structural engineering concept. Designer Sharon Hartley drew inspiration from her undergraduate engineering statics coursework to create these decorative cuffs, which feature a distinctive zig-zag lacing pattern that mirrors the visual structure of a Warren Truss. These boot cuffs are versatile projects suitable as quick gifts or personal stash-busting knits.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a pair of boot cuffs—cylindrical leg warmers designed to slip over boots or wear independently as legwarmers. The finished cuffs measure 12 inches in circumference when unstretched and stretch to a maximum of 22 inches, making them adaptable to various leg and boot sizes. The cuffs are worked in the round or flat, depending on needle choice, and feature an engineered geometric pattern throughout.
Knitting Techniques
- Garter Stitch Foundation: The primary stitch pattern is garter stitch, which creates a textured, reversible fabric ideal for legwarmers and boot cuffs
- Yarn Over Decreases: The distinctive zig-zag lacing effect is achieved through strategic yarn overs and dropped stitches, creating the Warren Truss-inspired visual pattern
- Dropped Stitch Technique: Yarn overs are intentionally dropped from the left needle without being knitted, allowing stitches to ladder down and form the geometric lacing design
- Circumference Customization: The pattern allows for size adjustments by adding or subtracting multiples of 4 stitches from the cast-on number, enabling customization for different leg sizes and gauges
Stitches Used
- Knit (k): The fundamental stitch that forms the base of the garter stitch pattern
- Purl (p): Combined with knit stitches to create the textured garter stitch fabric
- Yarn Over (yo): Creates new stitches and the openwork lacing effect that defines the Warren Truss pattern
- Dropped Stitches: Yarn overs are deliberately dropped from the needle without being knitted, allowing them to unravel downward and form the characteristic zig-zag lacing
Materials and Specifications
Yarn: The pattern calls for 120 yards (110 meters) of worsted weight yarn, making this an excellent project for using up yarn scraps and stash odds and ends. Both aran and worsted weight yarns are suitable for this design.
Needles: US 10 (6 mm) straight needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) are recommended, or whatever size is needed to achieve the correct gauge. The choice between straight needles and DPNs depends on whether the crafter prefers working flat or in the round.
Gauge: 13 stitches over 4 inches in garter stitch. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the correct finished dimensions, though the pattern accommodates gauge variations through cast-on adjustments.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While garter stitch itself is a beginner technique, the strategic use of yarn overs and intentional dropped stitches to create the geometric lacing pattern requires intermediate-level understanding of stitch manipulation and pattern reading. Crafters should be comfortable with basic knitting fundamentals and confident in their ability to work with decreases and yarn overs.
Design Inspiration
The Warren Boot Cuffs represent a creative intersection of engineering and fiber arts. The Warren Truss, a structural framework used in civil engineering, provides both the aesthetic inspiration and the conceptual framework for this design. The zig-zag lacing pattern visible in the finished cuffs directly references the geometric efficiency and visual appeal of this engineering principle, making these cuffs as intellectually interesting as they are visually striking.
