♥ Warm Hearts Tammy & Beanie Knit Pattern

What is Being Made

This downloadable knitting pattern by designer Mona Zillah creates two coordinating hat designs: a tammy and a beanie. Both pieces feature a warm hearts theme and are suitable for intermediate knitters seeking stylish, cozy headwear projects.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method. The projects are worked in Double Knitting (DK) weight yarn, which provides a balanced fabric suitable for creating fitted, warm hats. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with basic techniques and able to follow pattern instructions with some complexity.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Cast On: Long-tail cast on is used to create the foundation stitches with elasticity suitable for hat openings
  • Knit Stitch (k): The basic knit stitch forms the primary fabric structure
  • Knit Two Together (k2tog): This decrease stitch is used to shape the hat crown and create fitted shaping
  • Central Double Decrease (cdd): Slip two stitches knitwise together, knit one stitch, then pass the slipped stitches over the knit stitch—an advanced decrease that creates a centered, decorative reduction
  • Make One (m1): Increases are worked by lifting the bar between two stitches and knitting through it, with options for right-leaning (m1r) and left-leaning (m1l) variations to maintain consistent shaping

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The pattern specifies Double Knitting with Merino by James C. Brett, a blended yarn composition of 70% Acrylic, 20% Nylon, and 10% Merino. This blend combines the warmth and softness of merino wool with the durability and easy-care properties of acrylic and nylon.

Yarn Quantities: The pattern calls for approximately 40 grams (127 yards / 116 meters) of Main Color (MC) and 20 grams (64 yards / 50 meters) of Contrasting Color (CC), totaling 317 yards per 100 grams. These modest yardage requirements make this an excellent pattern for using yarn stash or leftover yarn from previous projects.

Needles: The pattern requires 3.75mm (US No. 5) and 4.0mm (US No. 6) circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs). The circular needles are specified as 16 inches / 41 centimeters for the body of the hat, with 6-inch / 15-centimeter DPNs available for working the crown decreases when stitches become too few for circular needles.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 24 stitches by 24 rows equals 4 inches / 10 centimeters when measured over stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for creating hats that fit correctly, and knitters should swatch before beginning to ensure their tension matches the pattern's specifications.
